This position performs and coordinates a wide range of routine and specialized laboratory research procedures under minimal supervision. It involves carrying out designated research tasks and projects, collecting, organizing, and summarizing acquired data, and preparing reports and manuscripts. The role also includes maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment, ordering supplies, and providing training to other research personnel. Additionally, it requires adherence to established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines, including those for handling hazardous substances.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Related Field of Study required
  • Experience in an academic or laboratory research setting 3-5 years required
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to oversee the work of others.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to identify problems and develop solutions.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and set deadlines.
  • Strong database management and overall computer skills.
  • Functions with speed, precision and an understanding of theory behind tests and procedures.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations
  • Intermediate level mathematical skills and ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of scientists and employees.

Responsibilities

  • Develop or have input into modifications of existing assay techniques, experimental protocols, or new procedures.
  • Synthesizes and interprets results.
  • Prepares written and/or verbal status reports.
  • Performs statistical analysis and makes recommendations.
  • Independently performs non-routine, highly specialized experimental procedures.
  • Composes and may present sections of research reports and manuscripts.
  • Performs routine and highly specialized or unique laboratory tests and procedures using sophisticated and intricate research equipment and techniques.
  • Participates in the design of experiments.
  • Conducts literature searches; reviews and compiles information from journals and suggests use for new techniques to the supervisor.
  • Coordinates and carries out designated research tasks and projects making use of library research, structured interviews, data processing, and other investigative techniques.
  • Collects, organizes, and summarizes acquired data using scientific techniques, including computer programs; assists in judging the validity of the data obtained.
  • Submits periodic reports of project status to supervisor, regularly suggesting additional tests and/or modifications in current procedures.
  • If applicable, after appropriate training, cares for and/or monitors animals.
  • Performs or assists with surgery as required.
  • If applicable, after appropriate training, uses radioactive, infectious, bio-hazardous, and/or toxic substances.
  • Maintains, calibrates, troubleshoots and/or repairs laboratory equipment.
  • Alerts supervisor to defective equipment, and may schedule repairs and maintenance as needed.
  • Orders supplies and equipment with supervisor’s approval.
  • Organizes material for the preparation of research papers, manuscripts, progress reports, articles, and/or other documents for publication and/or presentation.
  • Provides information and training on specific research techniques and equipment operation as needed.
  • Oversees the activities of other research personnel as required.
  • Maintains established policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety and environmental control.
  • When applicable, stays current in safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of bio -hazardous, infectious, radioactive, and toxic substances.
  • Performs clerical duties incidental to research tasks as required.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through educational programs, seminars, conferences, and/or professional affiliations.
  • Consults with other researchers to exchange information.
  • Performs other laboratory related functions as required or directed.
