About The Position

Analytical Mechanics Associates (AMA) is seeking to hire a Senior Research Scientist to join a research team at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. The successful applicant will provide technical expertise to the Advanced Materials and Processing Branch (AMPB) under the RSES (Research, Science and Engineering Services) contract. The successful candidate will serve as a technical expert in materials science and engineering to support the design and performance estimation of thermal radiators for space applications. For example, novel thermal radiator designs at the materials level are needed to acquire thermal and dust-tolerant properties to sustain the presence under stringent environmental conditions on the lunar surface. The selected candidate is expected to effectively work in a technical team environment and support various tasks, including materials design, coupon fabrication and processing , and detailed characterization tasks, such as thermal and mechanical evaluations, as well as the use of optical and electron microscopy equipment. This role requires a candidate who can effectively communicate with the technical team, carry out experimental tasks, explore new research directions, and clearly present technical outcomes in both presentations and written reports. The candidate must be able to cultivate a workplace environment of engagement, diversity, inclusion, excellence, and innovation. Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related technical field.
  • 15+ years of experience in advanced aerospace materials research.
  • Experienced with materials synthesis and processing.
  • Comprehensive skills for various materials characterization techniques.
  • Proficiency in engineering project execution.
  • Demonstrated skills in technical presentations and written reports.
  • Experience in mentoring entry-level engineers or students.
  • Must be PC-literate and familiar with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Agile and adept at mastering new concepts, with the capacity to adjust quickly to changing needs.
  • Eligibility for this role is contingent upon U.S. citizenship or Legal Permanent Resident status, in accordance with customer site security protocols.
