Senior Research Engineer 1

Verisk•Boston, MA
•$120,000 - $130,000

About The Position

The Senior Research Engineer develops, enhances, and supports the engineering and vulnerability components of Verisk’s atmospheric peril portfolio risk analysis models for regions worldwide. The role quantifies the effects of atmospheric hazards—including tropical cyclone and other straight-line winds, severe convective storms, winter storms, hail, snow, and freezing temperatures—on buildings, infrastructure, contents, and loss of use. This includes assessing physical damage and resulting monetary losses and downtime. The engineer works with structural engineers, meteorologists, hydrologists, hydraulic engineers, statisticians, and specialists in probabilistic risk assessment. The position involves independent and collaborative research, implementing research in risk models and software, and presenting and explaining results to internal stakeholders and external clients. It also includes real-time and virtual building damage assessments during and after significant natural catastrophes.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in Civil Engineering, with an emphasis in Structural Engineering or Building Sciences.
  • At least 2 years of catastrophe modeling or damage estimation experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in performance-based design, probabilistic and stochastic risk assessment and modeling, and reliability theory as applied to structural engineering.
  • Experience with C#, Python, or similar programming languages such as C/C++, R, or MATLAB; alternatively, experience implementing AI-assisted coding and familiarity with coding.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience in data analytics, including analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing large datasets to support research and modeling.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of GIS applications such as ArcGIS and SQL Server.
  • Experience in claims analysis, risk assessment, or forensic engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire, synthesize, and analyze building inventory, industry insured loss, and insurance claims data to understand building vulnerability to atmospheric hazards in multiple regions worldwide.
  • Learn and work with proprietary Verisk datasets and integrate them into Verisk’s extreme event models.
  • Conduct research and analysis to develop vulnerability functions and monetary loss curves for structural and non-structural building and infrastructure components exposed to hurricane winds, downbursts or straight-line wind, tornadoes, hail, and snow.
  • Implement research in Verisk’s portfolio risk analysis models, including programming loss simulation code and analysis tools and validating probabilistic risk assessments.
  • Use GIS and similar tools for data visualization and analysis.
  • Perform real-time and virtual building damage assessments during and after significant natural catastrophes.
  • Prepare and present work at internal staff and external client meetings.
  • Write technical content for internal and external publications and client-facing documentation.
