Senior Research Engineer - Applications Technology

ArcelorMittal•Schererville, IN

About The Position

ArcelorMittal is seeking a highly skilled, self-directed senior research engineer with strong expertise in sheet metal formability. The successful candidate will have a robust understanding of large deformation mechanics observed in metal forming, skills in laboratory techniques to characterize formability, familiarity with industrial stamping processes and be conversant with the use of commercial FEA programs to predict formability. Experience in computational materials science is highly desirable, including the use of ICME tools, multiscale modeling, and AI/ML techniques to predict material behavior, guide experimental design, and accelerate the development of advanced steel products. The candidate will also be expected to conduct R&D activities, work collaboratively with other ArcelorMittal R&D facilities and with customers in the general area of formability and stamping, and deformation mechanics of ArcelorMittal’s sheet steel products. Local and international travel might be required to support other ArcelorMittal R&D laboratories or customer trials.

Requirements

  • M. S. in Mechanical Engineering or in Materials Science with minimum of 3 years’ experience in formability evaluation
  • Strong expertise in mechanics of sheet metal forming
  • Experience with experimental sheet formability evaluation techniques such as FLD, tribological behavior, springback
  • Familiarity with industrial forming processes
  • Strong skills with commercial FEA software such as ABAQUS, LS Dyna, COPRA or equivalent for formability prediction of different industrial forming processes.
  • Expertise with Digital Image Correlation (DIC)

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science with a strong emphasis on solid mechanics as applied to sheet steel formability and fracture.
  • Familiarity with 3D microstructure construction tools such as Dream.3D to generate RVEs for subsequent analysis.
  • Expertise in crystal plasticity to enable multiscale prediction of mechanical behavior from product microstructure and phase properties.

Responsibilities

  • Follow ArcelorMittal Safety policies & procedures and take ownership in improving safe operation in the sheet steel formability laboratory
  • Manage the formability laboratory equipment and be the point-of-contact for laboratory evaluations in ArcelorMittal North America. Develop SOPs for the equipment and ensure compliance with the lab Quality Management System.
  • Conduct experimental determination of global and local forming limits following industry standards & customer specifications.
  • Design tooling and test methods to replicate part forming and stamping operations. Use the learnings from experiments to provide guidelines for successful forming of ArcelorMittal’s products.
  • Perform FEA simulations of forming processes using commercial FEA software. Develop techniques for continuous improvement of FEA predictions of part forming under production conditions.
  • Collaborate with product design, and AEPX teams to provide insight into formability behavior to enable improved products and successful end-customer implementation.
