About The Position

The Senior Research Associate in the College of Engineering (COE), Center for Automotive Research (CAR) initiates and leads research and development efforts focused on experimental research of learning based controls, powertrain systems and controls, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), autonomous vehicles and related systems. This role involves planning, conducting, demonstrating, and documenting sponsored research projects and activities, functioning as the technical expert in areas such as vehicle efficiency, safety and security technologies, control systems, reinforcement learning, machine learning, simulation, sensing, and estimation technologies. The position also includes developing procedures for experimental data analysis, promoting the interdisciplinary nature of research across multiple departments and centers, serving as co-Principal Investigator on research grants, assisting in proposal preparation, and acting as a liaison with research sponsoring agencies and other institutes. Additionally, the role requires preparing technical reports, writing journal and conference articles, making presentations, mentoring graduate students, developing course content, pursuing new research programs, and supporting teaching and training in relevant areas.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or relevant degree.
  • 4 years’ experience in an engineering research capacity.
  • Ability to translate, adapt and apply academic and/or practical knowledge to the conduct of engineering research.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work dynamically in a diverse team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Initiates and leads research and development efforts focused on experimental research of learning based controls, powertrain systems and controls, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), autonomous vehicles and related systems.
  • Plans, conducts, demonstrates, and documents sponsored research project and activities, functioning as the technical expert.
  • Develops procedures for experimental data analysis.
  • Recognizes and promotes the interdisciplinary nature of powertrain systems, intelligent transportation systems and autonomous vehicle research across multiple departments and research centers.
  • Serves as co-Principal Investigator on research grants and contracts.
  • Assists in the preparation of research proposals.
  • Serves as liaison with research sponsoring agencies as well as with other research and educational institutes.
  • Prepares technical reports submission to sponsoring agencies.
  • Writes journal and conference articles.
  • Makes presentations at conferences and symposia.
  • Mentors and coordinates graduate students in analyzing and documenting their research results and activities and projects.
  • Develops and maintains course contents.
  • Pursues new research programs.
  • Supports teaching and training in learning based controls, safety and security of autonomous systems.
