About The Position

The Senior Research Assistant will primarily support the Joslin research division by implementing and processing samples for transcriptomic, metabolic, and genetic analyses within the Molecular Phenotyping and Genotyping Core Laboratory. This role also involves assisting with research projects for the Doria Lab Group. As a healthcare organization, vaccination against influenza is a condition of employment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, or related field
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience relevant to essential responsibilities of the job.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Adherence to lab safety protocols when working with biological and other hazardous materials.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous practical Molecular Biology experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with omics database management preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with oversight, maintenance, quality control, scheduling, troubleshooting equipment malfunction, and renewing annual service contracts for the Molecular Phenotyping and Genotyping Core Laboratory.
  • Maintaining the core database and analysis software, performing data transfer, backup, and safeguarding operations.
  • Maintaining core supply inventories, ordering supplies, managing chargeback account records, assisting with monthly iLAB billing reports, preparing buffers and reagents, and replenishing stocks.
  • Enforcing adherence to current core policies and procedures among users and operators.
  • Assisting in establishing new procedures and policies and modifying existing ones.
  • Oversight and conduct of laboratory protocols, including providing training and guidance to core users on Seahorse experiments, digital PCR experiments, and NanoDrop eight accuracy.
  • Performing DNA extraction and aliquoting, RNA extraction, and analysis of RNA, DNA, or libraries using Bioanalyzer or similar instruments.
  • Providing training and guidance to core users on the use of the Qiacube Connect instrument, SNP genotyping, and other molecular genetic analyses.
  • Obtaining or developing a working knowledge of protocols for single cell/single nucleus suspension, GEMS generation, and library preparation to assist with experiment design, equipment use, and troubleshooting.
  • Oversight of PCR equipment, single-cell sequencing platform, Seahorse bioanalyzers, Tissue Lyser, microscope, spectrophotometers, ultrasonicator, Bioanalyzer, and Qiacube, including maintenance and scheduling of preventive maintenance, quality control, SOP adherence, and documentation.
  • Processing human biospecimens and performing ELISAs on specimens collected for the Doria Lab’s clinical research studies (20% of effort).
  • Interacting with investigators and fellows using core resources, assisting with sample preparation, analysis, instrument use, and troubleshooting experimental problems.
  • Meeting with the core director weekly and/or as needed.
  • Assisting the core manager with the preparation of data for core usage reports.
  • Assisting with writing and preparing applications for core-related grants.
  • Providing information and assistance to core users for grant applications and renewals.
  • Attendance at Doria and Patti lab meetings is encouraged.
  • Attending Joslin Tuesday internal research seminars.
  • Working extended hours, weekends, and holidays on an exceptional basis, as agreed upon with the Core Director.
  • Interacting with equipment vendors and arranging training sessions for Joslin staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
