About The Position

The Senior Research Administration Specialist is an advanced-level research administration professional who leads complex pre-award activities and applies project management principles to support faculty and research teams across assigned units. The role serves as a subject matter expert in proposal development, sponsor guidelines, and research administration processes, with an emphasis on strategic planning, coordination, and execution of sponsored research proposals. The position independently manages a portfolio of highly complex proposals and collaborates with principal investigators, departmental leadership, and central offices to ensure timely, compliant, and competitive submissions. It coordinates timelines, tracks deliverables, facilitates communication across stakeholders, and supports multi-investigator and multi-institutional proposals. The role also mentors and guides research administration staff, promotes best practices, streamlines processes, and supports continuous improvement, without serving as a formal supervisor. Limited post-award work, approximately 10%, includes award setup support, interpreting award terms, and advising on financial and administrative compliance. This is an internal posting for permanent, time-limited, and layoff priority employees of UNC–Chapel Hill only. The position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that includes a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC–Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
