About The Position

Iron Horse Rail Services is seeking an experienced and detail-driven Senior Railcar Inspector / Estimator to lead or support our railcar inspection and estimation process. Requirements

  • 5+ years of inspection, mechanical, or estimation experience in rail, oil& gas, industrial, marine, or heavy equipment environments. Candidates with experience in tank/vessel inspection, NDT, industrial coatings, or heavy equipment maintenance are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Deep working knowledge of FRA regulations, AAR Interchange Rules, and industry repair standards.
  • High comfort level with digital workflows, including tablets, repair management systems, and reporting tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Confidence navigating between shop floor realities and office-based coordination.
  • Valid driver's license and vision correctable to 20/20.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification or working knowledge in welding (AWS/CW10) or Nondestructive Testing methods (e.g., VT, PT, UT, UTT).
  • Prior experience supervising or mentoring a team.
  • Skill interpreting technical drawings, work scopes, and inspection reports.
  • Strong math and estimation skills for repair pricing.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and oversee FRA, DOT, AAR, and customer-compliant inspections of inbound and outbound railcars.
  • Take ownership of the inspection process—from arrival assessments to final sign-off.
  • Create and review digital work orders and detailed repair estimates using tablets or computers.
  • Evaluate mechanical condition, recommend repairs, and generate pricing proposals aligned with regulatory standards and client needs.
  • Collaborate across operations, QA, and customer service to align inspection timelines with production goals.
  • Support or lead inspection department operations, including mentoring junior inspectors, scheduling inspections, and contributing to process improvements.
  • Maintain high accountability for safety, documentation accuracy, and communication.
