About The Position

We are seeking a Senior Radiological Engineer who will provide expert level support for the operation of a diverse range of radiological instrumentation to meet needs throughout Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Areas of focus include the Radiological Effluent Stack Monitoring program, the Central Radiological Counting Laboratory, the Portable Nondestructive Assay (NDA) program, and the Whole-Body Counting Facility. This position resides within the Nuclear and Radiological Measurements (NRM) team of the Nuclear Measurements and Analytical Services (NMAS) Group of the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD) under the Environmental, Safety, Health, and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Requirements

  • BS Degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related technical field.
  • Eight or more years of professional experience in health physics, nuclear engineering, nondestructive assay, or operational radiation protection.
  • Extensive knowledge of gamma spectrometry fundamentals – gamma-ray interactions, detection systems, calibration, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and gamma-ray spectra interpretation.
  • Knowledgeable of laboratory quality assurance processes and procedure development.

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced science or engineering degree in directly related discipline (e.g. health physics, physics, radiochemistry, etc.) will be given appropriate consideration in lieu of experience.
  • Recent experience with radiological effluent processing and monitoring systems, including a thorough understanding of sampling methodology, fluid flow dynamics, filtration mechanisms, and effluent monitoring regulatory requirements.
  • Advanced computing skills, including data reduction, analysis, and presentation.
  • Thorough working knowledge of Mirion Technologies gamma spectrometry software applications including their software development toolkit and ISOCS.
  • Experience with the development and reporting of total measurement uncertainty as it relates to NDA.
  • Knowledge of Mirion’s APEX In-vivo software application.
  • Experience operating and maintaining In-vivo measurement systems.
  • Well versed in current regulatory and consensus standards for radiation detection.
  • Working knowledge of the Python programming language.
  • A history of institutional problem-solving and application of creative solutions to radiation measurement challenges.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary subject matter expert within the NRM Team for the Radiological Effluent Stack Monitoring Program.
  • Develop and expand the stack monitoring program with the addition of future spectroscopic stack monitoring systems.
  • Provide technical guidance for the operation of instrumentation within the Central NPRD Radiological Counting Lab, which consists of fixed high purity germanium detectors, alpha spectrometers, gross alpha/beta counters, and a liquid scintillation counter.
  • Assist in the development of In-situ Object Counting (ISOCS) models to evaluate complex assays and develop defensible estimates of the total measurement uncertainties in support of the NRPD Portable NDA program.
  • Support the operation of the whole-body counting, lung counting, and wound counting capabilities, facilities, and instrumentation.
  • Perform technical equipment evaluations and develop technical basis documentation for existing and future technology applications.
  • Mentor less experienced radiological engineers within the group.
  • Participate in incident/accident investigations requiring in vivo measurement and wound counting support due to potential intakes of radioactive material.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and other technical issues as necessary.
  • Participate in audits, inspections, verifications, and surveillances.
  • Support other activities in the Nuclear Measurements and Analytical Services Group as needed.
