Senior Radar Systems Engineer

Nuro•Mountain View, CA
•$193,930 - $291,150

About The Position

Nuro is seeking a senior radar systems engineer to guide the technical strategy, evaluation, and supplier development of its radar sensing capability. The role sets technical direction and standards for evaluating and selecting radar sensors, with hands-on expertise spanning radar systems from antennas and MMICs through digital signal processing and the supply chain. The engineer will shape radar hardware requirements, assess market offerings, and work with suppliers to develop capabilities for Nuro’s autonomous driving system. The role balances sensor performance, cost, and manufacturability to support technically sound choices that can scale commercially. It connects Perception, Systems, Product, Software, and Mechanical teams with suppliers, translating system needs into sensor requirements and communicating supply-base insights and technical roadmaps to engineering peers and executive stakeholders. The position also mentors the existing radar team and builds long-term supplier and industry relationships.

Requirements

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Physics, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 6 years of professional engineering experience, including substantial hands-on work with radar or closely adjacent sensing systems.
  • Deep expertise in radar fundamentals, including link budget, antenna technologies, signal processing such as FFT and CFAR, detection, and design trade-offs.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance price and performance, including cost, manufacturability, and capability considerations.
  • Proven experience evaluating, specifying, and selecting sensor hardware using structured, data-driven benchmarking and qualification.
  • Direct experience influencing suppliers at component (Tier 2) and module/system (Tier 1) levels, from requirements through production.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the automotive radar ecosystem, including vendors, technologies, cost and manufacturability drivers, and emerging trends.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and increasing the technical capability of colleagues.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including explaining complex technical trade-offs to technical and executive audiences.
  • Collaborative, partnership-oriented approach and ability to build trust with internal teams and external suppliers.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with automotive or other safety-critical product cycles, including validation, reliability, and functional safety standards such as ISO 26262.

Responsibilities

  • Set the technical direction for radar evaluation and selection strategy.
  • Define radar performance requirements, specifications, and evaluation criteria based on perception and system needs.
  • Develop, conduct, and standardize bench and in-context evaluation methods for candidate radar sensors.
  • Engage Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers to influence component roadmaps and module designs.
  • Lead technical due diligence on radar vendors and technologies and produce comparative assessments and recommendations.
  • Mentor and develop radar engineers.
  • Partner with Perception, Software, and Mechanical teams to integrate radar selections into the broader sensing and compute architecture.
  • Build long-term relationships across the radar supply base and participate in joint development programs and relevant industry or standards bodies.
  • Communicate technical roadmaps, trade-offs, and recommendations to engineering peers and executive stakeholders.
  • Balance price, manufacturability, performance, reliability, and capability when making sensor decisions.
