Senior R&D Engineer - Sequencing Systems

Roche•Santa Clara, CA
•$87,500 - $137,040

About The Position

At Roche Sequencing Solutions, the Senior R&D Engineer helps drive the mechanical design, development, and commercialization of sequencing systems and advanced automation equipment. The role combines engineering design and detailed documentation with hands-on prototyping, subsystem assembly, and laboratory hardware testing across fluidic, mechatronic, pneumatic, thermal, optical, and electrical subsystems. The engineer advances automated DNA sequencing pipelines from concept through manufacturing, focusing on mechanical architecture and engineering design alongside practical laboratory execution. This includes building, testing, iterating, and troubleshooting hardware to support system integration and performance. The role also involves collaborating with engineers and scientists on integration and providing guidance or oversight to team members, consultants, contractors, and vendors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related field, with 3+ years of industry experience; alternatively, 2+ years of experience with a Master's degree, or entry-level experience for PhD holders.
  • Track record designing life science or diagnostic reagent-handling systems, including direct experience bringing an automated fluidic system from feasibility to manufacturing.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals for designing complex, high-performance fluidic systems and custom manifolds integrating pumps, valves, sensors, and thermal controls.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for detailed mechanical design, manufacturing drawings, and PDM/PLM document management workflows.
  • Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping, including 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC; manual machine shop equipment; benchtop testing; and device control or data acquisition using Python or LabVIEW.
  • High motivation, independence, and resourcefulness in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing automation systems and related mechanisms using electric and pneumatic actuators.
  • Proficiency with FEA simulations in SolidWorks Simulation.
  • Proficiency in GD&T.
  • Understanding of chemistry, biological assays, and sequencing technology.
  • Experience developing products in a regulated environment.
  • A positive, proactive attitude and strong passion for science and engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Design custom fluidic components, assemblies, and subsystems, including tolerance analysis and thorough documentation.
  • Prototype and test mechanical and electromechanical designs.
  • Optimize workflows, protocols, and assays; collect, analyze, and interpret data to drive technical progress.
  • Define and refine requirements and specifications.
  • Select and evaluate off-the-shelf components.
  • Assemble, test, and troubleshoot subsystems and complete systems.
  • Analyze data, write reports, and present results.
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists on integration efforts.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to team members, consultants, contractors, and vendors.
