About The Position

At Torc, we are a leader in autonomous driving technology, focused on developing software for automated trucks. As part of the Daimler family, we are transforming how the world moves freight. The Test Engineer supports the testing of our autonomous vehicles, along with software development and engineering activities for tools, automation, and CI/CD pipelines within our Autonomous Eco System. This role involves generating and executing vehicle test plans, analyzing test data, designing test strategies, and supporting the full lifecycle of proprietary software solutions. The position is crucial for enhancing the robustness and safety of our self-driving technology, requiring close collaboration with product, design, and engineering teams to ensure safety-focused testing and delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or a relevant technical field with 6+ years of technically relevant work experience; OR Master's degree with 3+ years of experience; OR Doctorate degree with 1+ years of experience.
  • Working-level experience in transportation, engineering, safety, or related technology.
  • Working-level experience with testing and verification of systems composed of both hardware and software components.
  • Working-level software development knowledge in a Linux environment (Ubuntu, CentOS).
  • Working knowledge of software programming and scripting languages (Modern C++, Python, Bash, REST APIs).
  • Working-level troubleshooting skills (real-time and in-depth analysis) for complex robotic systems, with a full system perspective (mechanical, electrical, and software).
  • Working knowledge of version control systems (Git).
  • Working-level experience with a DevOps mindset and knowledge of CI/CD delivery concepts and tools (Jenkins).
  • Working knowledge of automation and configuration management principles.
  • Working knowledge of Agile methodologies (Kanban/Scrum).
  • Ability to monitor software on a laptop, and read, analyze, and type in a moving vehicle for extended periods.
  • Working-level analytical and problem-solving skills with good critical thinking.
  • Ability to maintain continuous focus, stay alert, and maintain composure in highly stressful environments.
  • Experience operating in a complex, dynamic environment under occasional high-stress situations.

Responsibilities

  • Generate and execute test plans to identify system limitations and collect data for improvements.
  • Perform root cause analysis of defects and performance issues, recommending solutions.
  • Design and deploy instrumentation and infrastructure for data capture.
  • Analyze test data and generate reports on performance issues and capability improvements.
  • Maintain a verification and validation report against system requirements.
  • Collaborate with software component teams to generate performance metrics and implement vehicle-level tests.
  • Provide regular reports to software component and system design teams, including consolidated test results and detailed defect reports.
  • Perform on-road testing in autonomous vehicles as an observer/annotator.
  • Travel domestically or internationally to support on-road vehicle testing (up to 25%).
  • Execute full software development lifecycle activities using C++ and scripting languages in a Linux environment, employing Lean-Agile methodologies.
  • Complete software assignments including design, implementation, unit testing, vehicle testing, and maintenance, adhering to quality, build, deploy, test, safety, and process guidelines.
  • Assist in root cause analysis of issues found in testing and process automation.
  • Support the team in identifying daily assignments and reporting progress.
  • Support software and system-level test plans and verification strategies for feature development and bug fixes.
  • Design and implement systems for data acquisition and analysis from remote vehicles.
  • Ensure software updates do not regress performance using simulation software and scenarios.
