About The Position

Corning is seeking a Senior Prototyping Technician to advance optical fiber connectivity innovation by designing, building, and testing prototype components, fixtures, and lab-based systems. The role turns engineering concepts into functional prototypes and scalable process solutions while working closely with engineers and manufacturing teams. The position involves hands-on prototype development, experimental builds and process trials, lab equipment and measurement-system support, and collaboration with global manufacturing plants on manufacturability and process improvements. It includes travel of up to 15% depending on project needs, including international travel, and does not support immigration sponsorship.

Requirements

  • Two-year technical degree in a relevant technical field, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a development, experimental laboratory, manufacturing engineering, prototype shop, or similar technical environment.
  • Demonstrated experience building, modifying, troubleshooting, and testing mechanical and/or electromechanical prototypes, fixtures, equipment, or assemblies.
  • Experience supporting product development, process development, manufacturing process improvement, or technology transfer projects.
  • Experience with electrical and mechanical assembly, measurement systems, and data collection, including assembling and debugging mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and/or automated systems.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, mechanical models, work instructions, and specifications.
  • Proficiency using hand tools, electrical tools, measurement instruments, and lab or shop equipment, plus rapid prototyping methods such as machining, 3D printing, laser processing, adhesives, dispensing, joining, or custom fixture fabrication.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Data analysis using Microsoft Excel, Statistical Process Control (SPC), or statistical software such as JMP or Minitab.
  • Familiarity with fiber optics.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Chinese, and/or Polish.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment and with discrete manual and/or automated processing equipment.
  • Experience designing prototype parts, fixtures, tools, or manufacturing processes using Computer-Aided Design (CAD); Creo or Pro Engineer experience strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience working within a clean room environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the hands-on design, fabrication, assembly, modification, and troubleshooting of prototype equipment, fixtures, tooling, fiber optic termination systems, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Plan and execute complex prototype builds, experiments, and process trials using Design of Experiments (DOE); develop test methods, analyze data, and report findings to project teams.
  • Collaborate with engineers and subject matter experts to convert design concepts, drawings, and schematics into functional prototypes and improved fiber optic termination and connectivity processes.
  • Set up, calibrate, and maintain lab equipment and measurement systems; create build records, work instructions, test reports, and bills of materials.
  • Partner with global manufacturing plants to assess manufacturability and recommend design and process improvements.
  • Guide junior technicians and contractors as needed.
