About The Position

AECOM is seeking an accomplished geomechanics professional to contribute to and grow our advanced numerical modeling consulting practice with a focus on open pit mining, underground mining, tunneling, tailing storage facilities, mine waste facilities, and other complex geotechnical infrastructure projects. This role combines hands-on numerical modeling, technical leadership, business development, and team development responsibilities. The successful candidate will join an established and highly capable numerical modeling team as a technical leader, mentor, and practitioner, personally performing complex numerical analyses while leading project teams, developing staff, building client relationships, and expanding the firm's numerical modeling practice.

Requirements

  • BS in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Geomechanics, or related discipline and 8+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Valid U.S Driver’s License

  • Recognized expertise with FLAC, FLAC3D, 3DEC, ABAQUS, PLAXIS, RS2, RS3, or equivalent numerical modeling software.
  • Experience with static, dynamic, and seismic analyses.
  • Experience supporting open pit, underground, and tailings projects from concept through operations.
  • Experience with probabilistic methods, risk analysis, and uncertainty quantification.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration or ability to obtain.
  • Established industry network within mining and infrastructure sectors.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and personally execute advanced numerical modeling analyses using finite element, finite difference, discontinuum, dynamic, and coupled-process methods for open pit mining, underground mining, tunneling, tailing facilities, waste storage facilities, and other complex geotechnical systems.
  • Develop model strategies, assumptions, calibration methods, validation procedures, and quality-control standards.
  • Support engineering teams by providing numerical modeling insights that inform engineering evaluations, risk assessments, and project decision-making.
  • Advance company capabilities through innovation, automation, machine learning, and emerging computational methods.
  • Develop new client relationships and identify opportunities for advanced numerical modeling services across the mining, tunneling, and geotechnical infrastructure sectors.
  • Expand the firm's portfolio of numerical modeling projects through business development, proposal support, and trusted technical advisory services.
  • Create additional modeling opportunities for existing staff by winning new work and expanding relationships with key clients.
  • Support the continued growth of the team's technical capabilities and market presence through strategic project pursuits, technical innovation, and staff development.
  • Lead project teams delivering numerical modeling and geomechanics studies from proposal through final deliverables.
  • Manage project scope, budgets, schedules, resources, and client communications.
  • Prepare and present technical reports and recommendations to project teams, clients, regulators, and review boards.
  • Mentor engineers in numerical modeling methodologies, engineering judgment, and application of modeling results through technical coaching, oversight, and project-based development.
  • Support the professional development of staff through technical guidance, project experience, and knowledge sharing.
  • Foster a collaborative technical culture that promotes innovation, continuous learning, and excellence in engineering.
  • Support feasibility studies, due diligence reviews, and mining project evaluations through quantitative engineering analyses.
  • Contribute to probabilistic and risk-based assessments of mining and infrastructure projects.
  • Work with project leaders to evaluate how geotechnical and geomechanical risks influence project economics, capital investments, operational performance, and long-term asset value.
  • Participate in risk workshops, failure mode assessments, and decision-support processes.
