About The Position

The Augusta mill sits along the Savannah River, on the state border between
Georgia and South Carolina and manufactures light, medium, and heavy weight
coated paperboard. It is a well-invested SBS paperboard manufacturing facility
with approximately 600 thousand tons of capacity.  This facility boasts over 700
employees and has been in operation for almost 65 years.  Located on 3,000
acres, the Augusta site operates two paper machines that produce 1,940 tons per
day.  The Augusta Mill is Clearwater Paper’s largest paperboard facility and
critical to the success of our strategy and future.

The Project Engineer is responsible for all mechanical and electrical related
issues in projects as well as leading projects supporting two paper machines,
power and recovery, pulp, woodyard, recaust, bleaching and sodium hypochlorite
plant. Performs as a team member of various project teams where capital
improvements have been identified against specific business issues. Also serves
as a coordinator or clearing house of ideas for improvement techniques and
implementation strategies.  Understand and align business operations and
Engineering in the execution of their role to exceed customer expectations and
align with Clearwater Paper business, cultural, financial, and operational
objectives. Actively leads and participates in the plant safety, housekeeping,
and continuous improvement efforts.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
• 10+ years’ capital project engineering experience, 5 of which should be in Pulp and Paper industry
• Self-directed and high initiative with ability to handle variety of tasks in a 24/7 manufacturing environment
• Knowledge of a variety of project contracting strategies
• Must be able to work with a diverse group of people in a professional manner and be able to handle several work tasks concurrently
• Able to work in a high-speed manufacturing environment, sustained exposure to high-frequency noises, multiple hours standing, walking on concrete surfaces, heat, and cold and mill environments
• Able to wear and abide by Personal Protective Equipment that is required in the mill environment
• Able to climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolding
• Could be exposed to hazardous chemicals used in the manufacturing process
• Potential for off-hour support including nights and weekends

• Demonstrated ability to effectively work with vendors, managers, and production employees to achieve goals
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Must be capable of understanding and troubleshooting complex industrial systems and equipment
• Understanding of LEAN manufacturing and Continuous Improvement (CI) concepts preferred
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
• Proficient in MS Project

Responsibilities

• Develop, design, and estimate costs for the direct installation of electrical/mechanical products or plant systems
• Manage capital projects to deliver capital projects on time and on budget
• Analyze product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine designs that can be produced by existing manufacturing or processing facilities and methods
• Determine feasibility of designing new plant equipment or modifying existing facilities considering costs, available space, time limitations, company planning, and other technical and economic factors
• Provide technical information concerning manufacturing or processing techniques, materials, properties, and process advantages and limitations which affect long range plant and product engineering planning
• Direct and coordinates manufacturing or building of machine improvements and/or plant systems
• Evaluate engineering test results for possible application to developments of systems or other uses
• Work with maintenance to troubleshoot electrical/mechanical machine problems
• Lead and guide all work with piping systems, structural steel, and civil design
• Confer with engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information
• Research and analyze design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications
• Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications
• Research, design, evaluate, install, operate, and maintain mechanical products, equipment, systems and processes to meet requirements, applying knowledge of engineering principles
• Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations to maintenance crew
• Supports mill and department goals in safety, environmental compliance, quality, cost, productivity, and continuous improvement
