About The Position

Nexus Water Group is seeking a Senior Project Engineer responsible for the planning, design, and construction supervision of capital and in-house projects for water and wastewater utilities. This role also involves providing engineering expertise and support for Operations, project management, business analysis, and regulatory support for facility operations. The Senior Project Engineer will contribute to the treatment and distribution of water, as well as the collection, treatment, and discharge of wastewater.

Requirements

  • 3 years’ Project Management experience
  • At least five years of work experience as a Professional Engineer, preferably in a water and wastewater utility or engineering services company.
  • Experience utilizing standard procedures used in design and completion of projects, including construction techniques and equipment
  • Experience in administering consultant engineering contracts and construction contracts.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, preferably Civil, Mechanical or Environmental Engineering
  • Professional Engineering (P.E.) licensure.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license
  • A strong commitment to, and working knowledge of, safety best practices
  • Comprehensive understanding of engineering best practices in municipal water/sewer utility operations and construction.
  • Strong project management skills and demonstrated ability to manage the scope, budget, and schedule of projects
  • Result-focused, detail-oriented, customer-centric and self-motivated individual
  • Ability to exercise independent, professional judgement and expertise in areas of responsibility
  • Demonstrated ability to develop clear and coherent written proposals or project reports
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Capable of communicating with the public in tactful, courteous manner. Business acumen with ability to engineer balanced solutions
  • Experience utilizing standard procedures used in design and completion of projects, including construction techniques and equipment
  • Experience in administering consultant engineering contracts and/or construction contracts
  • Skilled in preparation of engineering plans, specifications, reports, estimates and contracts.
  • Knowledge of principles, theories and best practices of engineering in all phases of project preparation and completion.
  • Able to use engineering survey, drafting equipment and electronic engineering calculators and/or computers.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, and ability to learn internal software programs
  • Ability to perform physical duties such as occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs unassisted, walking, and sitting for extended periods of time: occasionally climbing, pulling, kneeling, twisting, turning, stooping, reaching, and bending. This may include extended driving periods of up to several hours.

  • Proficiency with SCADA, GIS, and asset management programs is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Perform project scope alternative analysis to determine the best solution in developing a business case.
  • Create engineer standards, designs, and plans for water production, water distribution, wastewater collections, water and wastewater treatment processes and systems.
  • Evaluate project proposals and utility work designs and provide stamp or seal of approval for engineering designs as the Professional Engineer.
  • Independently exercise sound professional judgement in the development of design criteria, selecting suitable processes, materials, and other aspects related to utility operations and capital project execution.
  • Engage with regulatory agencies, other utility operators and technical personnel as needed to facilitate continuing utility operations and capital project execution.
  • Develop business cases for engineering projects by performing alternative analyses including scope, cost, and schedule according to best practices.
  • Prepare engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Oversee several mid-sized or larger utility projects on an ongoing basis.
  • Select and specify materials and equipment for projects.
  • Determine when an external consultant engineer or contractor is required. Hire and oversee external contractors or consultants based on capital project needs.
  • Perform inspections to ensure that the construction of the utility projects follow the design documents, and the design intentions are being met; occasionally perform testing.
  • Work with Field Operations to coordinate construction of the engineering plans, communicating project schedule and tasks.
  • Routinely designated as the project manager to lead and manage projects.
  • Routinely act as construction superintendent to ensure industrial controls are in place and procedures are executed safely and properly according to requirements.
  • Approve change order and cost proposals to modify parts of an ongoing capital works projects in response to an identified issue.
  • Plan for and review updates to engineering and construction standards.
  • Perform hydraulic system analysis including use of and update of water distribution computer model.
  • Conduct field inspections and troubleshoot project issues on site.
  • Answer service requests for technical assistance from operations.
  • Respond to service requests and act as a technical resource and engineering subject matter expert for Business Development, Project Management, Operations and the Business Unit.
  • Assist in the preparation of an effective master plan and/or timely system improvement and replacement program.
