About The Position

Rockwell Automation is integrating machine vision and visual inspection capabilities into its Automation Control Software portfolio, specifically alongside Studio 5000 Logix Designer and FactoryTalk Optix. This role focuses on the 'edge' component – the software that operates on on-site hardware, managing multiple cameras, performing high-speed inspections, communicating with Logix controllers, and maintaining functionality even during network disruptions. This is a critical systems-level position with significant architectural responsibility, encompassing multi-camera pipelines, edge-to-cloud communication, control interface timing, and the balance between local and cloud processing. The role operates within an AI-first engineering environment, utilizing coding agents, AI-generated code evaluations, and advanced tooling for development and testing under human supervision. The goal is to ensure high-quality code in a system where performance is paramount.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent years of relevant work experience.

Typically requires 8+ years of related experience in a software product development environment.
Bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Experience architecting and shipping systems software that runs on constrained or embedded targets
Experience owning performance and reliability for a real-time or near-real-time system
Depth in C++, Rust, Go, or Python for systems-level work on Linux.
Experience with containerized or immutable Linux deployments on edge hardware.
Experience with camera, sensor, or other high-rate device interfaces and pipelines.
Experience with industrial control interfaces - PLC, EtherNet/IP, OPC UA, or equivalent fieldbus protocols.
Experience with edge-to-cloud messaging patterns and behavior under intermittent connectivity.
Track record simplifying an inherited codebase and measurably improving its performance.

Responsibilities

Own the architecture of the edge runtime: process model, camera pipeline, inference scheduling, and resource budgets.
Design and maintain the edge-to-cloud communication layer, including reconnection, buffering, and behavior under degraded networks.
Own the control interface between inspection results and the PLC, including timing and determinism requirements.
Drive performance work - throughput, latency, and memory - against real multi-camera production loads.
Simplify and consolidate the edge codebase, and set the standard for how it is structured and tested.
Act as a recognized technical resource across the product for edge and systems design decisions.
Partner with DevOps on provisioning, update, and rollback for edge devices in the field.
