About The Position

The Senior Project Accountant serves as the Accounting Department's primary representative for enterprise projects, system implementations, process improvements, fixed asset initiatives, and growth activities. This role coordinates accounting support for projects, including testing, capital and fixed asset accounting, process documentation, and procedure development. This role partners with business and technology stakeholders to ensure accounting requirements, internal controls, and financial reporting considerations are incorporated into organizational initiatives while supporting process improvements, operational efficiencies, and the successful transition of projects into ongoing operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive accounting experience, including financial reporting, month-end close, account reconciliations, fixed asset accounting, and internal controls.
  • Experience supporting capital projects, system implementations, process improvements, or other cross-functional initiatives impacting accounting operations and financial reporting required.
  • Experience working with accounting systems, ERP platforms, financial applications, system upgrades, or conversions required.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications required.
  • Knowledge of GAAP accounting standards
  • Knowledge of Symitar/Jack Henry software
  • Knowledge of relevant financial regulations and compliance requirements specific to credit unions and the financial industry.
  • Knowledge of tax laws and regulations applicable to credit unions and financial institutions.
  • Knowledge of fixed asset accounting, capitalization requirements, and accounting considerations related to capital projects and organizational growth initiatives.
  • Skilled in operating computer equipment and general office machines such as personal computers, copiers, projection equipment, audio/video, Microsoft Teams, Zoom Video Communications, and adding devices.
  • Ability to perform testing, validation, and quality assurance activities related to accounting systems, processes, and operational changes
  • Ability to identify opportunities for process improvement and support the implementation of efficient, scalable, and controlled accounting practices.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to efficiently understand and follow oral and written instructions, perform routine duties without close supervision, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with other team members.

  • Credit union, banking, or other financial institution experience preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or project management certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Accounting Department’s primary representative and subject matter expert for enterprise projects, system implementations, process improvement initiatives, and organizational growth activities.
  • Partners with business leaders, project teams, and technology stakeholders to identify accounting requirements, internal control considerations, and financial reporting impacts related to projects and strategic initiatives.
  • Attend and actively participate in project meetings, providing accounting guidance, recommendations, and support regarding financial reporting, fixed assets, and accounting processes.
  • Coordinate and perform accounting and financial reporting activities related to capital projects, facility improvements, branch expansions, and other strategic growth initiatives, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), organizational policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor and analyze project-related expenditures and capital investments to ensure appropriate accounting treatment, capitalization, depreciation, and timely recording of project costs.
  • Coordinate and execute accounting-related testing associated with new systems, products, services, process changes, enhancements, and data conversions, including the development of test plans, test scripts, validation procedures, and issue resolution activities.
  • Evaluate the accounting impact of new products, services, technologies, and operational changes, providing recommendations to support accurate financial reporting and effective internal controls.
  • Collaborate with business and technology partners to identify, develop, and implement process improvements and automated solutions that enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of Accounting operations.
  • Support the successful transition of projects and new initiatives into ongoing operations by establishing sustainable accounting procedures, controls, documentation, and training materials that facilitate effective adoption and long-term operational success.
  • Develop, maintain, and recommend enhancements to accounting procedures, job aids, training materials, and departmental documentation to promote consistency, compliance, and operational effectiveness.
  • Maintain Accounting Wiki content and departmental procedure documentation, ensuring information remains accurate, current, and aligned with business objectives, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities related to project accounting, fixed assets, capital expenditures, and other assigned accounting areas.
  • Prepare and analyze project-related financial information, account reconciliations, and supporting documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with internal controls.
  • Assist internal and external auditors by providing documentation, explanations, and support related to capital projects, fixed asset accounting, and project-related transactions.
  • Serve as a technical accounting resource and cross-functional partner, providing guidance and support to Accounting team members and business stakeholders as needed.
  • Maintain current knowledge of accounting standards, credit union regulations, industry trends, and system enhancements through ongoing professional development and training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
