About The Position

VHB’s is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Senior Project Accountant to join our Regional Finance team. In this role, you will provide crucial support in managing financial aspects of engineering projects. This position is hybrid and located in Hauppauge, NY.

Requirements

  • Solid knowledge and understanding of accounting/finance/billing principles, methods, and procedures.
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel).
  • Experience using accounting/financial/contract management software/systems (e.g., Deltek Vision).
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Exceptional problem solving, critical thinking, customer service, and organizational skills.
  • Strong project and time management skills.
  • Team-oriented with strong capability to work independently.
  • Self-motivated with attention to detail.
  • 4+ years of progressive project accounting experience, ideally within the Architecture, Engineering, or Construction (AEC) industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Management, or equivalent field

Responsibilities

  • Spearhead project setup, budgeting, and contract maintenance, ensuring precise alignment of contract compensation structures, billing methods, and baseline budgets.
  • Partner with Project Managers to analyze client contracts, establish accurate monthly billing cadences, and proactively identify/address scope variations and contract omissions.
  • Conduct rigorous reviews and analysis of subconsultant and subcontractor agreements, maintaining meticulous financial records and ensuring compliance with contract terms.
  • Oversee the end-to-end lifecycle of client contract billings, project expenses, and financial reporting, ensuring all disbursements and invoices meet strict deadlines.
  • Investigate and resolve complex Accounts Receivable and working capital issues, including work-in-progress (WIP) tracking, unbilled variances, and suspense account corrections.
  • Drive the month-end close process for assigned portfolios, delivering strategic recommendations on revenue reserves and conducting comprehensive variance analysis.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for internal teams and clients, researching and resolving complex financial inquiries, billing discrepancies, and escalation items.
  • Collaborate closely on Accounts Receivable collections to optimize cash conversion cycles and minimize aging balances.
  • Champion team development by participating in employee training, mentoring junior accounting staff, and contributing to performance evaluations.

  • Ensure all financial and accounting operations are executed in strict compliance with federal, state, and local regulations alongside company policies.
