About The Position

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Professional, Electrical Engineer with a Protective Relaying emphasis for our [Location] office. Candidates for our [Alternate Location] will also be considered. The successful applicant will have a direct role in the design, engineering, and studies of protection systems for equipment on the bulk power system. This includes the protection of substations, transmission lines, generators, renewables, industrial, and distribution systems. Be involved in projects with our Electrical Studies, SCADA, and Protection (ESSP) team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited).
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant post education experience as an electrical engineer executing deliverables for Protective Relaying projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution at a utility, industrial, or commercial scale.
  • Experience working with Operations and project controls for purposes of reporting and proposal development.
  • Proficient knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including active involvement in a variety of rehabilitation and new design projects.
  • Working knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of electrical engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software (i.e., CADD, Aspen, CAPE, ETAP), AutoCADD electrical, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or ability to obtain one.
  • Proven history of completing similar projects in a consulting environment.
  • Commissioning and testing experience, or strong skills in protecting equipment at high voltages (69kV and higher).
  • Experience mentoring others and a willingness to do so.

Responsibilities

  • Protective Relaying: Symmetrical component analysis, protection philosophy development, relay settings, and integration with SCADA systems.
  • Protection Analyses: Electrical model development, short circuit, time-current coordination, arc flash, NERC compliance, and event analysis
  • Leadership: Lead teams on client projects to meet the scope, schedule, and budget. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Data Acquisition: Support infrequent onsite site visits to collect data and able to discuss project specifics at appropriate technical level for clients.
  • Industry Standards: Working knowledge or awareness of applicable industry practices for protection as outlined in IEEE, ANSI, or NERC PRC standards.
  • Organized: Flexibility to support a variety of project schedules to meet client needs and able to prioritize responsibilities effectively.
  • Applicable software: AcSELerator Quickset, GE Enervista, ASPEN Oneliner, CAPE, SKM-PTW, ETAP, RSCAD
  • Applicable hardware: SEL, GE, Siemens, ABB, Beckwith, RTDS
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
