About The Position

WSP is seeking a Civil Engineer (Part-Time Position on average 12~16 hours/week) to join our Morristown, NJ office. This role provides civil, transportation, highway, and pavement engineering support for the design and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in both public and private sectors. Responsibilities include assisting with research, planning, scheduling, design, analysis, development, QA/QC reviews, and construction of highways, bridges, interchanges, pavements, retaining structures, drainage systems, and stormwater management systems. The role also involves generating accurate reports and documentation, ensuring adherence to industry standards (NJDOT, NJTA), and maintaining quality control.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
  • 20+ years of relevant post-education experience.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and their application to project work-related issues.
  • Highly familiar with specifications, construction codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Analytical mindset with an ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • In-state project site travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with discipline-specific design software
  • Prior civil/transportation/pavement drainage engineering experience.
  • A valid and clean driving license
  • Ability to produce schedules using Primavera, Microsoft or other client required software with minimal support.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from team members or work sites, including site surveys, blueprints, as-built plans, GIS data, pavement management system data, guiderail and drainage management data, and maps for project development, design, and construction.
  • Perform basic highway, drainage, geometric, and pavement engineering work, including research, QA/QC services, and inspections of proposed and existing site/structure conditions.
  • Conduct site surveys, pavement condition surveys, pavement testing and design, and soil erosion evaluations and mitigation designs for transportation and transit projects.
  • Assist with the development of schedules, QA/QC manuals, technologies, instrumentation, monitoring devices, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Assist with verifying concept design characteristics and providing technical assistance on design and construction issues, including schedule, planning, constructability, and compliance with NJDOT/NJTA designs and specifications.
  • Write design memorandums/reports summarizing findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using sketches, calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, and software.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate measurements and statistical analysis of highway substructure and superstructure data.
  • Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis on schedules, design concepts, construction, mitigation, improvement activities, and remediation projects.
  • Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers and planners on projects with infrastructure authorities and development projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
