About The Position

The Smartly Platforms and Architecture Team is seeking a Senior Product Platform Engineer to take end-to-end ownership of a platform domain and the engineers who depend on it. The role focuses on building platform capabilities that other engineering teams want to adopt, tying work to measurable impact, and fostering growth in platform engineers. Smartly is a profitable company heavily investing in engineering and AI, processing pay for over 200,000 payees across 20,000+ companies. The company is modernizing its platform and seeking a Senior Engineer to own a domain within it.

Requirements

  • Shipped real systems.
  • Owned a domain: designed, built, and ran it, and been accountable when it broke.
  • Deeply comfortable in the demanding application engineering space.
  • Very familiar with C# and dotnet.
  • Comfortable taking existing decisions, applying taste and judgment, and engineering modern solutions.
  • Comfortable moving toward a modular monolith, extracting business logic from stored procedures, and making choices about database and cloud technology.
  • Thrive in a space of continuous improvement and help others feel at home there.
  • Possess judgment, taste, vision, and context.
  • Ability to distinguish between good AI-generated output and plausible-sounding output.
  • Understand what "platform as product" means in practice.
  • Ability to determine when a best practice is not the right practice for a specific codebase, domain, or moment.
  • Own outcomes and have agency; find ways to achieve goals without waiting for perfect conditions or blaming circumstances.

Responsibilities

  • Own a platform domain end-to-end, setting direction, building standards and tooling, making technical decisions, and being accountable for adoption and outcomes.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions alongside Principals and management.
  • Conduct design reviews for your domain and participate in reviews across the team.
  • Hold 1:1s with engineers you mentor and with Principals who mentor you.
  • Pair with engineers in product squads to co-design solutions and unblock technical challenges.
  • Build new self-service capabilities for product squads.
  • Improve CI pipelines to shorten feedback loops.
  • Instrument new features with observability.
  • Refactor shared frameworks in the monolith and extract business logic from stored procedures.
  • Write design docs, ADRs, and agentic prompts for team-wide use.
  • Mentor and sponsor promising staff as your mana grows.
