About The Position

The New York Times is seeking a Senior Producer to work closely with the Trust team on videos featuring Times staff. These videos will explain how the Times approaches its reporting, the nature of independent journalism, and the decisions behind its coverage, standards, and practices. The role requires expertise in vertical/social video production and audience engagement, with a proven ability to shape content and ensure it is seen on various platforms. The Senior Producer will guide a small team to make the Times's work accessible to a broad audience, translating it for platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube in alignment with existing NYT Audience goals and projects. This individual will serve as a go-to resource for newsroom and business-side colleagues, providing editorial guidance and constructive feedback, and must be comfortable enforcing deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom. The role involves working with desks across the newsroom and requires an effective communicator. This is an in-office position based in New York, requiring regular attendance in the office four days per week, with some flexibility for remote work per departmental guidance.

Requirements

  • 8+ years producing digital news videos.
  • 3+ years experience managing or supervising members of a video team.
  • Experience in digital or broadcast news.
  • Understanding of Times standards of journalistic excellence and truthfulness.
  • Understanding of mainstream and emerging social channels.
  • Demonstrated news judgment.
  • Ability to approach the full range of trust and credibility issues facing The Times.
  • Rock-solid judgment, a high-level understanding of what The Times considers fair and independent journalism.

Nice To Haves

  • Excellent writing, editing and communication skills.
  • Experience developing and editing visual material for social platforms.
  • Experience translating complex reporting and standards decisions into clear, audience-facing explainers.
  • Expert knowledge of current events with advanced level experience covering news stories in the US and internationally.
  • Command of a variety of video sources, including wire services, UGC, archival footage, motion graphics, and original footage.
  • Familiar with digital storytelling formats.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee video production and workflow for the Trust Team.
  • Drive innovative Trust-focused video that explains how Times journalism works, why we cover what we cover and how we make our decisions.
  • Greenlight story development ideas and give feedback on story edits for Trust videos.
  • Edit scripts and guide visual approaches for explainers, Q&As and other short-form videos on our journalistic process that build confidence and trust on and off platform.
  • Review, assign and provide feedback on stories.
  • Direct video production team in interviews and shoots as needed, helping colleagues translate complex reporting and standards decisions into accessible and compelling video.
  • Foster experiments with new video concepts and strategies that reach existing and new audiences, including people who may not already read, watch or listen to The Times.
  • Develop and ensure implementation of the visual strategy as well as create playbooks and provide guidance for the team to make this work a permanent part of our portfolio.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the Trust and Standards teams and other newsroom stakeholders to align video work with broader trust initiatives and training.
  • Effectively manage and collaborate with colleagues and cross-functional partners.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
