About The Position

The Athletic is seeking a Senior Producer to be the editorial lead for their new daily flagship live show. This role involves being the primary architect of the show’s daily rundown, translating The Athletic’s journalism into live segments, and collaborating with a team of producers, journalists, hosts, and editors. The Senior Producer will ensure all video clips, graphics, and guest segments are prepared for air and maintain the show’s timing and brand during live broadcasts.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in live production, specifically for sports or daily news talk shows.
  • Expert-level proficiency in industry-standard rundown software (e.g., Rundown Studio).
  • Exceptional scriptwriting ability, crafting punchy, conversational copy for live talent.
  • Strong editorial judgment with a deep understanding of sports stories and news prioritization.
  • Experience managing junior staff and providing constructive feedback in high-pressure environments.
  • Solid understanding of studio workflows and collaboration with Technical Directors and Audio Engineers.
  • Ability to work on a morning-of production cycle and adapt to breaking news requiring rundown rewrites.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the daily editorial meeting and own the "Master Rundown," deciding the order of stories, segment lengths, and visualization of sports data.
  • Oversee the writing of all show scripts, intros, and teases, ensuring the show’s voice is authoritative, witty, and consistent with The Athletic’s editorial standards.
  • Act as the "Line Producer" during live broadcasts, responsible for precise timing, communicating cues to talent, and making real-time decisions on content.
  • Supervise Associate Producers, Production Assistants, and Editors, providing direction on B-roll, graphics, and social media clipping.
  • Take ownership of complex feature segments, coordinating with the newsroom for reporter guests and ensuring they are prepped with talking points and visuals.
  • Review all video assets and graphics before air to ensure accuracy in spelling, attribution, and formatting.
  • Lead post-mortem meetings to analyze show performance and coordinate with the social team for immediate packaging of key moments for digital distribution.
