Senior Process Engineer - Cryogenic Systems

VEIRWoburn, MA
$130,000 - $160,000Onsite

About The Position

VEIR is seeking a Senior Process Engineer with extensive experience in cryogenic systems to join their engineering team. This role is system-level, focusing on the thermal and fluid architecture of cryogenic cooling systems. The engineer will be responsible for everything from initial calculations to equipment specification, vendor interaction, and operational documentation. This position requires a broad understanding of systems, the ability to question vendors effectively, review P&IDs, and create documentation that bridges design and operations. Experience in sectors like oil and gas (LNG), industrial gas, fusion energy, or space launch is highly relevant. While direct cryogenic experience is a plus, candidates with strong thermofluids expertise and practical system-building experience will be considered. The role reports to the Technical Lead - Cryogenic Systems and is part of a small, high-output team that values broad ownership and cross-functional collaboration.

Requirements

  • 6 to 8 years of experience in process or systems engineering, with a focus on thermofluids-intensive systems.
  • Mechanical or chemical engineering degree required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid systems design, including cryogenic or low-temperature applications.
  • Hands-on experience reading, creating, and reviewing P&IDs and PFDs, with fluency in standard instrumentation and equipment symbols.
  • Experience specifying and procuring major equipment items, including pumps, heat exchangers, cryogenic tanks, and associated controls.
  • A track record of producing engineering documentation: calculation reports, equipment specifications, operating procedures, or design basis memos.
  • Some exposure to process safety review methodologies (HAZOP, FMEA, or equivalent).
  • Experience from oil and gas (specifically LNG), industrial gas, fusion energy, or space launch is directly relevant.
  • Systems thinker who can hold the full picture of a complex fluid system while knowing which details matter most.
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity and incomplete information, structuring engineering problems before solving them.
  • Skilled at communicating technical findings clearly in writing and in cross-functional settings.
  • Energized by the pace and ownership that comes with an early-stage, high-impact deep tech environment.
  • Collaborative and straightforward: share what you know, ask when you don't, and hold yourself accountable to your commitments.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct cryogenic systems experience, specifically with liquid nitrogen, liquid hydrogen, or liquid oxygen handling.
  • Field experience observing or participating in system construction, commissioning, or startup, and feeding those lessons back into design.
  • Familiarity with the full project lifecycle: from concept and design through procurement, construction oversight, and commissioning.

Responsibilities

  • Own the thermal and fluid architecture of cryogenic cooling systems.
  • Perform first-principles calculations for cryogenic systems.
  • Specify equipment and engage with vendors for cryogenic subsystems.
  • Develop operational documentation for cryogenic systems.
  • Work across the engineering organization to ensure systems are designed, specified, and ready for reliable build and operation.
  • Review and develop a working understanding of VEIR's cryogenic system designs, existing documentation, and outstanding technical questions.
  • Complete engineering calculations or reports on high-priority system problems (e.g., liquid nitrogen tank thermal management, manifold flow distribution).
  • Build relationships with cross-functional counterparts in mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering.
  • Contribute to P&ID reviews, identifying gaps or inconsistencies in design documentation.
  • Own equipment specification and vendor qualification for cryogenic subsystems (pumps, heat exchangers, tanks, flow control components).
  • Produce formal calculation reports or technical memos to support design decisions.
  • Actively contribute to process safety reviews (HAZOP or equivalent).
  • Take on design and analysis tasks within product programs with limited oversight.
  • Lead cross-functional technical efforts to resolve complex system-level engineering questions.
  • Own the process engineering documentation library for assigned subsystems (operating procedures, maintenance guidelines, specification records).
  • Support design decisions across product lines as an internal resource for cryogenic and thermal systems expertise.
  • Independently drive engineering investigations from problem definition to documented, decision-ready output.

Benefits

  • Healthcare coverage with 100% employer paid premiums for medical, dental, and vision
  • 401(k) Retirement Savings Program
  • 12 Company Holidays + unmetered PTO
  • 12 Weeks 100% Paid Parental Leave for all new parents
