Senior Process Engineer

Applied Materials•Santa Clara, CA
•$147,000 - $202,500

About The Position

Applied Materials is seeking a Senior Process Engineer with deep expertise in thin-film processing to develop atomic layer deposition (ALD) processes for next-generation semiconductor nodes. The role owns ALD process development through optimization and integration, translating device requirements into robust, manufacturable processes. Candidates should have hands-on experience with thermal and/or plasma-enhanced ALD and strong systems-engineering skills, with a technical foundation in materials science, physics, and chemistry that supports understanding of precursor behavior, nucleation and growth mechanisms, and growth in complex 3D structures. Familiarity with ALD hardware—including vacuum systems, plasma sources, and precursor delivery—is important for collaborating with cross-functional teams to improve tool design and performance. The position involves designing and optimizing manufacturing processes for semiconductor and display technologies; collecting and analyzing data; characterizing hardware; troubleshooting engineering issues; measuring film properties; producing technical documentation; and working with customers, vendors, suppliers, and globally recognized R&D teams. The engineer will contribute to research and development projects involving state-of-the-art technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • 7–10 years of related experience.
  • Conceptual and practical expertise in complex problem solving.
  • Deep expertise in thin-film processing.
  • Hands-on experience with thermal and/or plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (ALD).
  • Strong systems-engineering skills.
  • Technical foundation in materials science, physics, and chemistry, including understanding of precursor behavior, nucleation and growth mechanisms, and growth in complex 3D structures.
  • Knowledge of ALD hardware, including vacuum systems, plasma sources, and precursor delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Design experiments, collect and analyze data, and compile reports on complex process engineering experiments across multiple products.
  • Use techniques and methods, and apply new technologies, to characterize hardware and complex systems across multiple products.
  • Generate internal and external product documentation, presentations, technical reports, and process engineering specifications.
  • Develop, plan, and execute process engineering projects within safety guidelines.
  • Train engineers in film-property measurement techniques and guide interpretation of data, adoption of methodologies, troubleshooting, and issue resolution.
  • Engage with customers to resolve complex process engineering issues with limited supervision.
  • Design and implement new technology, products, and analytical instrumentation.
  • Identify, select, and partner with vendors and suppliers with limited to no supervision.
  • Lead functional teams or projects as needed.
  • Develop, optimize, and integrate ALD processes for next-generation semiconductor nodes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve ALD tool design and performance.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Potential eligibility for a bonus program.
  • Potential eligibility for a stock award program.
