About The Position

FIELD/ADULT FACILITY PROBATION OFFICER SENIOR: The Senior Field Probation Officer is responsible for assessing and managing the risks and needs of clients on probation or in other community-based programs. The role involves developing treatment or case plans, facilitating various programs, and coordinating client transitions. Additionally, the position includes conducting investigations, communicating with justice system partners, and working to ensure safety for clients, staff, and the community. At the adult facility, all probation officers are responsible for assessments regarding the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) and resident classification.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Three (3) years’ experience as a probation officer or related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required depending on the assignment.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Pass a Background Investigation.
  • Pass a Prison Rape Elimination Action (PREA) Investigation.
  • Pass a Pre-Employment Physical.
  • Pass Fingerprinting.
  • Participate in E-Verify.

Responsibilities

  • Engage clients and families in the process of change, provide interventions that promote change, hold clients accountable, and monitor client compliance with court orders, state corrections directives, facilities rules, etc.
  • Perform case management and program services in juvenile and adult facilities, juvenile probation and adult probation/parole, and domestic relations, in collaboration with courts and other community justice partners.
  • Evaluate clients’ risks and needs through objective risk assessments, screening instruments, and specific tests.
  • Interpret assessment results to create individualized treatment or case plans and make referrals for relevant treatment/programming.
  • Develop case plans, conduct motivational interviewing, and assess clients' readiness for change.
  • Engage clients in the change process, assist with relapse prevention, and facilitate or coordinate program groups and educational programs.
  • Coordinate clients’ post-institution/release plans and assist in custody and parenting time mediation.
  • Conduct investigations, gather and evaluate background information, and prepare comprehensive reports and recommendations.
  • Complete court-ordered investigations for both adult and juvenile clients, as well as for domestic relations matters and internal facility-related issues.
  • Identify and communicate specific safety concerns to staff, community justice partners, and victims to ensure the safety of staff, clients, and the community.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with other community justice partners, including judges, law enforcement, prosecutors, defense attorneys, mental health professionals, and child protection services.
  • Provide information to law enforcement, including recommending arrests or detentions for clients as necessary.
  • Submit court reports and attend court hearings.
  • Assess the appropriateness of supervising clients from other jurisdictions requesting to reside in Ramsey County and arrange effective supervision for clients sentenced by Ramsey County District Courts residing outside the county.
  • Follow the appropriate interstate compact and intrastate transfer processes to ensure proper supervision.
  • Contact crime victims and victim advocates to inform them of court procedures, advise them of their rights, and provide resources for assistance.
  • Inform victims of any known client activities that may present a danger to them.
  • Monitor restitution payments and compliance, establishing payment schedules as needed.
  • Demonstrate leadership or facilitation of professional practice groups or client-focused programming as assigned, contributing to program quality, consistency, and staff collaboration.
  • Complete rotating or designated coverage duties as assigned to support unit operations and continuity of services.
  • Provide training, coaching, or mentoring support to colleagues as appropriate, contributing to staff development and knowledge sharing.
  • Maintain current and accurate client documentation, including assessments, plans, and required updates, in accordance with policy and professional standards.
  • Maintain required and role-appropriate training and certifications, including evidence-based practices, assessment tools, safety requirements, and refresher trainings.
  • Actively participate in committees, workgroups, or cross-functional teams to support organizational improvement and collaboration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of client activity, utilizing department and client data systems to ensure proper documentation and reporting.
  • Maintain regular, punctual attendance, adhering to the standards set by the ADA, FMLA, and all relevant federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Provide effective program supervision and deliver rehabilitative services to clients, both on an individual basis and in group settings, to support their progress and development.
