About The Position

As an optical engineer at BAE Systems Space and Mission Systems (SMS), you will play a key role in advancing our technology and developing innovative optical systems for airborne and space-based applications. The Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) Strategic Capabilities Unit comprises the technical talent and organizational leadership that enables the successful delivery of high-impact discriminating technologies for our customers’ missions. Requirements

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related field is required plus 8 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level related degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of related experience.
  • Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • 4 years or more of experience leading multi-discipline engineering teams.
  • Solid foundation in optical engineering principles, including optical design, analysis, alignment, testing techniques, and equipment.
  • Experience with cost and schedule reporting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in Optical Engineering (Master's or PhD).
  • Experience with programming tools such as Matlab and optical design/analysis software.
  • Knowledge of optical fabrication to support procurement of optics.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, develop, align, integrate, and test state-of-the-art optical systems for science, defense, intelligence, and commercial customers.
  • Lead in optical sub-system development, integration, and alignment, working closely with engineers from various disciplines.
  • Be a key team member of system level integration and performance verification.
  • Communicate status to Program Management.
  • Manage the program optical baseline including definition of tasks, budgets and schedules pertaining to the optical sub-system.
  • Procure and validate cutting-edge optical components to support system development.
  • Participate in design reviews, presenting findings, and providing input to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Contribute to proposal development, respond to RFIs, and author white papers to support advanced program development.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
