Senior/Principal Mechanical Engineer – Stride Shuttle Sorter
About The Position
We are seeking an experienced mechanical engineer to support the continued development of the Stride Shuttle Sorter. Stride is an established product, and this role will focus on improving its reliability, strengthening its technical foundation, and adapting the platform for new applications and markets. This is a hands-on technical role for someone who enjoys understanding how an entire product works, not just an individual component. You will investigate complex product issues, identify opportunities for improvement, and help the team make sound technical decisions that balance reliability, performance, cost, manufacturability, serviceability, and schedule. Success in this position also requires disciplined execution. Product improvements are only complete when the supporting analysis, drawings, bills of material, test documentation, and engineering changes are accurate and released. We are looking for someone who considers documentation and change control essential parts of good engineering. Depending on experience and demonstrated scope, this position may be filled at the Senior or Principal Engineer level.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of experience
- Considerable experience designing, developing, and supporting complex mechanical or electromechanical products.
- Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, including mechanisms, structural design, materials, tolerancing, manufacturing processes, and component selection.
- Demonstrated ability to independently investigate ambiguous technical problems and bring them to a documented, production-ready resolution.
- Experience improving the reliability of an existing product through root-cause analysis, testing, and design changes.
- Ability to understand system-level behavior and recognize how a change in one area may affect the rest of the product.
- Sound engineering judgment and the ability to make practical tradeoffs among technical performance, risk, cost, schedule, and product complexity.
- Experience taking designs through release and change-control processes, including drawings, bills of material, design reviews, validation, and engineering changes.
- Willingness to take ownership of both highly technical work and the detailed documentation required to implement it successfully.
- Ability to work autonomously while building alignment within a multidisciplinary team.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with industrial automation, material-handling equipment, robotics, conveyors, or other complex machinery.
- Experience supporting products deployed in customer or production environments.
- Familiarity with reliability engineering methods, failure analysis, risk assessment, and design verification.
- Experience designing for manufacturing, assembly, installation, maintenance, and field service.
- Experience with SolidWorks, PDM or PLM systems, and formal engineering change-control processes.
- Experience mentoring engineers or improving team processes, tools, or technical standards.
Responsibilities
- Develop a strong system-level understanding of the Stride product, including the mechanical system and its interactions with controls, electrical hardware, manufacturing, installation, and service.
- Own complex mechanical projects or major areas of the product from problem definition through design, analysis, prototyping, validation, documentation, release, and production support.
- Lead investigations into reliability and performance issues using structured root-cause analysis, testing, field data, and sound engineering judgment.
- Identify recurring problems and develop robust solutions that address underlying causes rather than individual symptoms.
- Evaluate how proposed changes affect the broader product, including reliability, safety, cost, manufacturability, installation, serviceability, and compatibility with existing systems.
- Support the adaptation of the Stride platform for new customers, applications, environments, and market segments while managing product complexity.
- Provide technical direction for mechanical projects or subsystem-level work involving other engineers and cross-functional partners.
- Create and maintain high-quality engineering documentation, including requirements, calculations, drawings, bills of material, test plans, test reports, design reviews, and engineering change orders.
- Work closely with manufacturing, sourcing, quality, controls, electrical engineering, installation, service, and product management.
- Communicate technical risks, tradeoffs, decisions, and recommendations clearly to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
- Review the work of other engineers and help strengthen the team’s technical practices, product knowledge, and documentation quality.
- Mentor less-experienced engineers and contribute to a collaborative and accountable engineering culture.
