About The Position

Marathon Petroleum is seeking a Senior Platforms Engineer to join its Infrastructure Engineering & Operations organization supporting the Midstream business. The role combines technical expertise and strategic planning to deliver secure, scalable, automated, and highly available infrastructure platforms for critical business and operational workloads. The engineer leads the design, implementation, automation, and lifecycle management of enterprise compute, storage, and virtualization platforms, partnering with platform engineering, cybersecurity, architecture, and operations teams. The work advances Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, Git-based development practices, and automation frameworks, with an emphasis on reliable, supportable, repeatable, scalable, and resilient platform services. The position is part of a job family with increasing responsibility, competency, and skill level; the actual title and pay grade depend on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, a related field, or equivalent experience.
At least 5 years of relevant platforms engineer experience.

Responsibilities

Identify performance bottlenecks, conduct root cause analysis, and implement solutions to improve platform and system performance and resource utilization.
Establish performance benchmarks, conduct capacity planning, and collaborate with junior engineers and cross-functional teams to optimize infrastructure performance and activities.
Improve troubleshooting procedures, minimize platform and system downtime, maintain documentation, and work with vendor technical support to resolve issues.
Lead platform and system technical support and troubleshooting, including escalated and complex issues; perform advanced system tuning and optimization using IT Service Management practices.
Collaborate with internal teams to improve support processes and methodologies.
Participate in future platform and system backup planning; lead disaster and system recovery design and testing.
Analyze performance and utilization data, identify trends, recommend optimizations, prepare infrastructure performance reports, and implement corrective actions.
Lead the design and configuration of complex platforms and systems in accordance with best practices and industry standards; maintain compliance with original designs and configurations and correct deviations.
Build and deploy highly available and scalable infrastructure solutions.
Create and maintain knowledge-base materials, including troubleshooting guides, configuration documentation, and best practices; organize training, mentor junior engineers, and encourage cross-team collaboration.
Design, implement, and support SAN storage platforms, ensuring performance, availability, resiliency, and alignment with business continuity and disaster recovery requirements.
Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code, automation frameworks, and automated infrastructure provisioning, configuration, and validation capabilities.
Implement and support DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, Git-based workflows, code reviews, automated testing, and deployment automation.
