Senior Platform Engineer (DevOps & Release)

Verano•Chicago, IL
•$85,000 - $100,000•Onsite

About The Position

This is a hands-on platform engineering role on a Scrum team. The Senior Platform Engineer keeps the company’s platform reachable, fast, secure, and deployable. The sites run on WP Engine behind Cloudflare, use Sweed for menus and checkout, and release to production weekly. The role owns production access, edge infrastructure, CI/CD, and the release process, while building automation that helps the team ship safely. The engineer writes and reviews code and takes sprint commitments as part of the team. The role covers production credentials and least-privilege access; Cloudflare DNS, TLS, caching, security rules, and Workers, managed as code and deployed through CI; weekly releases, hotfixes, rollbacks, and post-release verification; GitHub Actions pipelines and branch protection; monitoring, incident response, and blameless reviews; origin and edge performance; dependency security; and tested internal automation in Python or TypeScript. The engineer also establishes infrastructure for new brand sites and directs and reviews platform work by assigned UpWork contractors. During the first 90 days, the engineer will learn the platform and shadow a release, then take over release preparation, credential management, Cloudflare, and CI/CD work. They will subsequently run a credential rotation, move edge deployments into CI, address critical dependency alerts, improve performance against agreed targets, make deploys verifiable by build, and establish delivery metrics. The team works in two-week sprints and ships weekly. Changes require a ticket and reviewer, pull requests should be small and reviewed the same day, blockers are raised promptly, and retrospective actions are tracked as owned tickets. AI coding tools such as Claude Code and Cursor are used daily, with generated output checked against specifications; agent verdicts do not constitute approval, and credentials must not be entered into prompts.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of DevOps, platform, or SRE work on production web applications.
  • Production-depth Cloudflare experience, including writing and deploying Workers.
  • Experience with GitHub Actions and release strategy for a team shipping weekly, including tagging, hotfixes, and rollback.
  • Experience with secrets management, credential rotation, and least-privilege access.
  • Observability experience with Sentry and an APM such as New Relic or Datadog.
  • Ability to build tested automation in Python or TypeScript.
  • Scrum team experience.
  • Daily use of AI coding tools, with the ability to provide them good context and verify their output against specifications rather than trusting a green build.
  • Clear writing skills for runbooks and incident notes that teammates can follow during an emergency.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with WP Engine or another managed WordPress host.
  • Production experience with Next.js from the infrastructure side.
  • Experience with Terraform or another infrastructure-as-code tool.
  • Load testing and DORA metrics experience.
  • Jira administration and automation experience.
  • Regulated-industry or multi-brand e-commerce experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage production credentials and access across hosting, edge, and third-party services, including credential rotation and least-privilege design.
  • Manage Cloudflare for brand sites, including DNS, TLS, caching, security rules, and Workers; keep configuration in Git and deploy it through CI.
  • Own weekly releases, hotfixes, and rollbacks, ensuring each release is traceable and verified after deployment.
  • Build and maintain GitHub Actions pipelines, required checks, and branch protection, automating repeated manual checks as gates.
  • Maintain error tracking and uptime and performance monitoring, including monitoring the Sweed integration; respond around the clock to true emergencies such as site outages and write blameless incident reviews afterward.
  • Investigate and fix root causes of origin and edge errors, and work with frontend engineers on Next.js caching strategy.
  • Triage dependency advisories according to real risk and ship upgrades through review and testing.
  • Build tested internal tooling in Python or TypeScript for GitHub, Jira, and the delivery process.
  • Set up infrastructure for each new brand site, including its repository, hosting, edge, monitoring, and access, and automate the launch runbook.
  • Direct and review platform work performed by assigned UpWork contractors.
  • Write and review code and take sprint commitments as part of the Scrum team.
  • Learn the platform and shadow a release, then take over release preparation, credential management, Cloudflare, and CI/CD work during the first 30 days.
  • Run the next scheduled credential rotation, move edge deployments into CI, and clear critical dependency alerts during days 31 to 60.
  • Improve origin and edge performance against agreed targets, make every deploy verifiable by build, and measure delivery metrics during days 61 to 90.
