About The Position

Under general supervision of the Shift Supervisor, Senior Plant Operators will maintain and report changes in plant loading, fuel selection, and steam flow. They will assist line crews in the dispatch center with switching, de-energizing, and re-energizing the electrical transmission system and station auxiliaries. This role involves adhering to guidelines and following well-established routines, reporting abnormal conditions, ensuring environmental emission operational compliance, identifying faulty equipment, and reporting accidents to the supervisor. Work is reviewed based on results obtained and reports submitted. As the Authority serves the public 24 hours a day, employees are expected to work overtime as conditions demand, potentially on short notice during emergencies, and to perform essential assigned work.

Requirements

Must wear proper personal protective equipment.
Must be available for overtime work, as necessary.
Graduation from a vocational high school including or supplemented by courses in the mechanical or electrical trades.
Five years of progressively responsible experience in power and water plant operation.
Five years of which must have been as a Plant Operator 1st Class.
Must possess a valid Virgin Islands Driver’s License.
Must possess a valid TWIC card or be eligible to obtain one.
Must maintain HAZWOPER certification.
Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
Frequently required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Occasionally required to sit.
Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Responsibilities

In the absence of the Shift Supervisor, assumes the role and all duties associated with that of the Shift Supervisor.
Prepares plant permits.
Communicates directives for operation personnel.
Compiles operational data requested by the Compliance Officer or Compliance Technician.
Prepares the electric portion of electric generating units for service by connecting or removing units as required.
Changes and adjusts generator loading and voltage in accordance with system requirements.
Operates control boards, exciters, disconnects, oil circuit breakers, power circuits, main transformer connections, load and voltage control equipment, and signal systems.
Performs routine switching in accordance with verbal or written instructions from a supervisor.
Opens and closes high and low-tension disconnection switches and places protective tags to clear equipment.
Checks clearance for adequacy and reports the completion of such operations to the supervisor.
Observes instruments on all switchboards in the control room for unusual operating conditions and performs necessary functions to restore equipment to normal or remove it from service as directed by the supervisor.
Inspects and determines the operating condition of plant electrical and mechanical equipment external to the control room, including main and station service transformers, transmission substations, oil circuit breakers, station batteries and charging equipment, generator buses, instrument transformers, lightning arresters, air conditioning and ventilating equipment, fire protective equipment, and other station auxiliaries, including desalination units, auxiliaries, intake and outfall, and circulating water systems.
Assists in calculating changes necessary for fuel flow control and computes log sheet data.
Assists in maintaining daily and monthly reports on generation, steam, line outages, desalination operations, etc., indicating and integrating meter data, generator operating records, and the cutting, marking, and changing of charts.
Reports and corrects environmental emission operational compliance.
Reports faulty equipment or accidents to the supervisor.
