About The Position

The Senior Pharmacy Technician assists the pharmacist with the preparation of the prescription in an efficient and accurate manner with proficient use of pharmacy computer system. Must be able to accurately identify medications by use of NDC number and count and neatly label large volumes of prescriptions. Helps maintain appropriate prescription inventory. Manages the work area reducing the technical aspect for the pharmacist. Provides guidance and training for other technicians.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Must be a Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician with at least 3 years of pharmacy experience or a Registered pharmacy technician with at least 5 years of pharmacy experience.
  • Must be registered with the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy, with said registration being in good standing.
  • Sound interpersonal, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Good listening, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to determine dosages using basic pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Must be able to interpret prescriptions.
  • Must have computer skills and be able to accurately process prescriptions through the pharmacy’s software system.

Responsibilities

  • Selects appropriate drug, verifying NDC number, and assists with ordering to maintain appropriate inventory levels.
  • Counts with accuracy and double counts all controlled medications, preparing orders for final checks before dispensing by the pharmacist.
  • Selects appropriate packaging, restocking as needed, and applies labels neatly.
  • Uses professional telephone etiquette and displays a professional attitude in the workplace when addressing patients, medical office staff and coworkers.
  • Uses pharmacy computer system to assure accurate patient profiles and billing information is maintained.
  • Takes direction from the pharmacist in charge and applies constructive criticism.
  • Be aware of work flow and able to prioritize volume of work.
  • Be able to check in the delivery from the wholesaler, properly tagging items and stocking shelves, rotating stock, verifying receipt of items ordered.
  • Check inventory for outdates, remove from perpetual inventory and follow the return for credit procedures.
  • Provides outstanding customer service and maintains a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Able to process transactions through the pharmacy’s point of sale system with accuracy.
  • Refers all drug questions, legal issues, anything requiring professional judgment to pharmacist in charge.
  • Must complete monthly pharmacy technician continuing education.
  • Interprets prescriptions, enters information into computer system, reports any drug allergies, non-compliance or interactions to the pharmacist, and verifies insurance reimbursement.
  • Uses and refers to appropriate references as needed.
  • Follows insurance company drug formularies and processes prior authorizations as needed.
  • Phones insurance companies for explanation on questionable rejections making every effort to complete the billing of the prescription.
  • Assesses private pay prices.
  • Is the patient’s advocate, ensuring the patient receives the best service possible.
  • Takes ownership of problems and assists other employees with problem solving.
  • Serves as a mentor for new employees and provides training and guidance and supervision of less experienced technicians.
  • Manages the work area, directs work flow and employees to ensure that prescriptions are processed in the most efficient manner possible
  • Reports to pharmacist in charge, store manager or director of pharmacy any problems or potential problems with employees or customers.
  • Promotes and drives continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Request and accept a refill authorization from the prescriber or prescriber’s agent, so long as there is no change from the original prescription.
  • Accepting new verbal prescription orders for non-controlled drugs from a prescriber or prescriber’s agent.
  • Sending or receiving copies of non-controlled prescriptions (i.e. transfers)
  • Correctly calculates prescription prices for nursing homes needing “per diem” information
  • Assists facilities in auditing of controlled medications
  • Assists facilities with starter cabinets
  • Maintains residents’ medication sheets and ensures accuracy of orders
  • Is the patient’s/facility’s advocate, ensuring the patient/facility receives the best service possible
