Senior Petrophysicist

BKV CorporationDenver, CO
Hybrid

About The Position

The Senior Petrophysicist plays a critical role in Corporate Development by leading petrophysical evaluations in support of due diligence, acquisitions, divestments, strategic asset reviews, and BKV’s Upstream and growing CCUS business. This role is responsible for independently assessing subsurface data to quantify resource potential, identify technical risks, and evaluate value drivers across oil and gas assets and carbon storage assets. Leveraging deep expertise in petrophysics, reservoir characterization, and integrated subsurface interpretation, the Senior Petrophysicist delivers clear, defensible insights that inform investment decisions, portfolio optimization, and long-term development planning, and CCUS project screening. In partnership with cross-functional teams, this individual supports the evaluation of storage reservoirs, seal integrity, injectivity, capacity, and overall subsurface suitability for carbon sequestration opportunities. The position requires strong technical judgment, the ability to synthesize complex datasets under tight timelines, and effective communication of findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders. Demonstrates integrity, accountability and transparency; upholds BKV standards, values and culture.

Requirements

  • Expert knowledge of petrophysical principles and techniques, including advanced well log analysis, core data interpretation, and integrated reservoir characterization.
  • Strong experience applying petrophysical evaluations to asset valuation, due diligence, and strategic decision-making in oil and natural gas portfolios.
  • Ability to independently assess subsurface datasets to quantify resource potential, uncertainty, and technical risk under tight transaction timelines.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard petrophysical, geological, and reservoir evaluation software (e.g., Techlog, Power Log, Interactive Petrophysics, Petra, Kingdom, or similar).
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate multi-disciplinary datasets (logs, cores, seismic, geological, and engineering data) into defensible subsurface interpretations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and a clear understanding of value drivers and material risks.
  • Proven capability to communicate complex technical findings clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including executives and investment teams.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) with experience preparing management-ready materials and technical summaries.
  • Ability to work effectively and independently in a fast-paced, high-accountability environment while collaborating across teams.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple evaluations concurrently.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, sound technical judgment, and a growth mindset with the ability to adapt to changing business needs.
  • Growth mindset with a demonstrated ability to innovate, embrace change and have grit.
  • Bachelor’s degree required in Geophysics, Geology, Petroleum Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7-10 years of experience in petrophysical evaluations, with at least 5 years focused on due diligence or asset evaluation in the natural gas or petroleum industry.
  • Proven experience in reservoir modeling, log analysis, and integration of geophysical and geological data for natural gas projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive petrophysical analyses of well logs, core samples, coring data, and seismic data to assess reservoir quality, storage potential and development viability.
  • Evaluate geological and geophysical data to identify key risks and opportunities in oil, natural gas, and carbon storage assets.
  • Provide detailed technical assessments of reservoir characteristics, including porosity, permeability, saturation, fluid properties, rock quality, and mechanical behavior.
  • Develop, refine, and validate petrophysical models to enhance reservoir property evaluation and performance forecasting.
  • Integrate well log data, core analysis, and seismic interpretations to construct high-resolution subsurface models.
  • Estimate original gas in place (OGIP) and forecast recoverable volumes.
  • Interpret hydrocarbon saturation and water saturation to evaluate the economic viability of oil and natural gas reservoirs, and support carbon storage screening.
  • Evaluate reservoir heterogeneity, fluid dynamics, rock mechanics, and reservoir behavior to predict recovery potential, injectivity, and long-term performance
  • Assess subsurface risks such as geological faults, fractures, seal integrity, reservoir heterogeneity, rock strength, and in-situ stress behavior that may impact development or carbon sequestration
  • Support coring program design, core acquisition planning, and the integration of routine and special core analysis into subsurface evaluations.
  • Incorporate geomechanical analysis to assess fracability, wellbore stability, completion performance, caprock integrity, and subsurface containment risk.
  • Provide expert insights and strategic recommendations on reservoir quality, potential upside opportunities, and long-term development prospects for targeted acquisitions
  • Collaborate closely with geological, geophysical, reservoir engineering and CCUS teams to integrate data and refine evaluations.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports summarizing petrophysical analysis, coring results, geomechanical findings, reservoir characteristics, risk assessments, and economic implications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
