The Senior Payroll Specialist is the second level of a two level Payroll Specialist series. The incumbent serves as back-up for Payroll Manager to perform the functions of HRIS maintenance and the direction of payroll staff. Has authorization of all internal and GAO critical functions when Payroll Manager is out of the office. Position serves as a resource for payroll questions and concerns to management and staff. Ensures proper and accurate payment and reporting of employee wages in compliance with all State, Federal and local entity requirements. Employee is responsible for auditing and correcting leave plans and deferred pay. Employee creates payroll reports, audits for errors, observes trends, suggests new payroll strategies and supports budget team. Trains new staff and review their work. Coordinates the deferred pay by setting up deductions, monitoring use, and creating bi-weekly spread-pay. Assures the quality control of all payroll transactions, paychecks, payroll accounting, and leave accrual accuracy. Audits all pay entry by the payroll specialist and checks the final payroll payments. Reviews staff member related entry for timeliness and accuracy. Position will be responsible for some or all of the listed duties and/or additional duties that occur from time to time. This position may be available for remote work within Arizona (3 days per week in the office). The State of Arizona strives for a work culture that affords employees flexibility, autonomy, and trust.
