About The Position

The Contractor is responsible for directly providing a wide variety of technical assistant services and independently supporting Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) within the Civil and Criminal Divisions. At this level, the Paralegal/Legal Assistant II exercises more independent judgment than at the level I position. Prepares a variety of technical legal documents that are characteristically complex in format. Reviews incoming documents and material, considers the nature and the status of the case involved, and with limited instructions from AUSAs prepares, arrest warrants, summonses, true bills, motions, orders, non-disclosure applications and orders, stipulations, plea agreements, grand jury and trial subpoenas, and legal memoranda; Assists litigation teams in preparation for trial by evaluating, assembling and organizing documents, data, exhibits and other evidence for grand jury presentations, hearings, trials, and witness interviews. Develop a plan to perform audio/video conversion and editing, manage PowerPoint presentations, PDF files/portfolios, spreadsheets, binders, exhibits, charts, witness lists and jury instructions; Provides advanced automated litigation support and case management to AUSAs utilizing various software applications such as Relativity, Cellebrite, Axiom, eZManage, NetDocs, iPro Eclipse, Everlaw, CaseMap, TimeMap, Trial Director, USAfx (cloud storage interface), and SecureZip; Performs moderately complex specialized legal research to verify proper citations, statutory references, legislative intent, judicial precedents, and agency rules as related to assigned cases; Write preliminary drafts of simple legal memoranda and correspondence ensuring that they conform to local court rules and rules governing content, style and format; Assist with incoming discovery and other requested information to determine whether the materials are responsive to the government’s request and in an appropriate format/platform. Screens for privileged documents and materials. Resolves identified issues. Communicate with litigation teams about status of discovery projects; Compiles outgoing discovery in compliance with the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure and in accordance with stipulations, criteria and/or court orders for court, depositions and hearings; Use a variety of software applications to search and retrieve information necessary to complete assigned tasks: e.g., an internal case management database, files located on shared file network, and external sources such as court records. Synopsizes transcripts of hearings and oral arguments for attorney use. Ensures proper security is maintained over litigation support project materials; Performs docketing duties which involve tracking case filings using the case management system. As necessary, perform searches, generate reports, and analyze data produced from the case management system to determine case status and reconcile inconsistencies; Answers outside inquires not requiring legal interpretations. Exercises judgment and discretion in determining information provided to telephonic inquiries and visitors.

Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance.
  • Requires paralegal certificate, or JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study.
  • At least two years of litigation paralegal experience required; trial experience very helpful.
  • At least one year of experience in automated litigation support.
  • Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court system, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.
  • Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
  • Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
  • Role also requires hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
  • Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.

Responsibilities
