Senior Paralegal, Rights Management

MattelEl Segundo, CA
1d$46 - $56Onsite

About The Position

We’re seeking a talented Senior Paralegal to join Mattel’s growing Rights Management team within the Legal and Business Affairs group. Successful candidates will bring significant experience in entertainment and consumer products rights/intellectual property (IP) management, with the ability to independently execute and oversee end-to-end contract and rights management processes. This position is located at Mattel’s headquarters in Los Angeles.

Requirements

  • 5+ years’ experience working in IP or rights management within the entertainment and/or consumer products industry
  • Strong knowledge of IP law
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise rights management platforms (RightsLogic preferred), translating contract terms into structured, machine-readable rights data (e.g., territory, channel, language, product/category) for IP licensing and commercialization
  • Working knowledge of asset creation workflows and downstream participations/royalty accounting, including the impact of rights data on financial reporting and revenue participation
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Tech savviness with knowledge and expertise in Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint and other tools such as Airtable and ServiceNow
  • Ability to operate independently in a fast-paced environment, manage competing priorities, and deliver accurate, high-quality results with minimal oversight, exercising strong judgment and attention to detail
  • Self-starter who works independently but knows when to elevate issues and seek guidance from colleagues
  • Partner to Supervisors and Clients. Cultivate the trust and confidence of, and be an effective partner to, the candidate’s supervisors and clients.
  • Balanced Approach. Provide strategic advice that’s appropriately risk-balanced. Provide advice with risks and the long-term in mind, but without losing sight of the imperative to advance Mattel’s business – often with challenging deadlines.
  • Strategic Thinker. Identify issues and notify relevant Mattel stakeholders early – and then creatively present solutions to those issues in constructive consultation with those stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate Values. Excel in a culture that fosters and demands accountability, speed, trust, and ethical conduct. Work effectively within a talented, high-performing team in far-flung time zones around the world. Kindness and respectfulness are essential.
  • Curiosity and Growth. Be intellectually curious and eager to grow and develop. Be humble; recognize a continuing need to “learn on the job”; be receptive to constructive feedback; and elevate issues that are beyond one’s knowledge or comfort zone.
  • Engaged Practice Management. Proactively manage expectations of clients, business partners, and staff. Also proactively manage team, administrative functions, and issues across offices, time zones, and sub-practice areas. Skillfully juggle constantly changing priorities and sometimes conflicting objectives.
  • Excellent Work Product and Work Ethic. Write and present in a concise, audience-appropriate, and lucid manner – in emails, memos, and presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an expertise in Mattel’s IP portfolio and rights
  • Independently analyze and interpret complex ownership and licensing arrangements, translating contractual terms into structured, system-ready rights records
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and super user of the rights management system (RightsLogic), including validating data integrity and identifying opportunities for system and process enhancements
  • Partner with stakeholders to provide guidance on rights inquiries, including ownership, availability, and conflicts; facilitate rights collision checks and resolution workflows
  • Own and manage complex rights issues and escalations, exercising sound judgment on when to resolve independently versus escalate to deal leads and attorneys
  • Help manage historic digitization efforts with the ability to identify, prioritize and ingest agreements in the rights management system
  • Act as a mentor and provide guidance, training, and quality oversight to junior members of the rights management team
  • Develop strong cross-functional relationships with key stakeholders across Legal, IT, Finance, Royalty Accounting, and business units utilizing the rights management system.
  • Help drive user adoption and effective use of the rights management system
