About The Position

The Senior Orchestration Software Engineer will be a key member of Alexion’s Advanced Robotics & Data Orchestration Team within Product Development & Clinical Supply. The role owns the software layer that coordinates instruments and robots into reusable, push-button workflows. It involves designing state models, events, and integration modules; partnering with data engineering experts on schemas and event contracts; and delivering production-grade releases with observability and rollback. The position is software-focused and science-facing, translating scientist and operator needs into robust orchestration for pharmaceutical product development workflows, including verification via vision and sensors and data product development. The role is responsible for orchestration components that meet reliability and usability targets across instruments and work cells; audit-ready data trails for setpoints, states, recipe steps, and analytical outputs that align with validation and security expectations; high-quality documentation, release notes, and onboarding kits; and continuous reliability improvement using telemetry and corrective actions. Duties may periodically require work in a laboratory or manufacturing environment. The role is expected to work in person an average of at least four days per week, with individual flexibility respected.

Requirements

  • PhD with 0 years, MS with 4 years, or BS with 8 years of education/experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 4 years building software for laboratory or industrial automation or robotics, including hands-on orchestration or controls integration.
  • Proficiency in one or more automation-oriented programming languages, such as Python, C#, or Java.
  • Experience with event-driven patterns and state machines.
  • Experience with interfaces, SDKs, and message buses; integrating with schedulers and data services.
  • Familiarity with schema design, data contracts, and basic SQL.
  • Ability to collaborate with scientists/operators, mechatronics/controls teams, and data engineers.
  • Clear, user-focused documentation skills.
  • Ability, with or without accommodation, to lift or carry 15 pounds unassisted and 30 pounds assisted; work comfortably in a controlled environment with and around hazardous materials; gown and degown PPE; use a computer; communicate by phone, video, and electronic messaging; engage in problem solving, non-linear thought, analysis, and dialogue; collaborate with others; and maintain general availability during standard business hours.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with biologics workflows such as cell culture, purification, and analytics, and integration with ELN/LIMS/SDMS systems.
  • Hands-on work with robotics SDKs, verification via vision or sensors, barcode or RFID, or material-handling subsystems.
  • Familiarity with observability tooling for metrics, logs, and alerts; defining service levels; and structured postmortems.

Responsibilities

  • Translate scientist and operator requirements for throughput, usability, exception paths, and reliability into orchestration designs and software implementations.
  • Implement run-control logic, including state models, events, exception handling, recovery and rollback, and scheduling for automated work cells and instruments.
  • Develop reusable drivers, adapters, and interface modules aligned with documented contracts, coding standards, and versioning; review code and tests for quality.
  • Integrate instruments and robots with schedulers and data services using interfaces and SDKs; partner with data engineering experts to define schemas and event models for analytics and machine learning features.
  • Apply configuration-as-code, CI/CD, automated testing, and secure development practices; ship documented releases and migration guides.
  • Instrument workflows with telemetry, logs, and alerts; define service level indicators and objectives; participate in postmortems and reliability exercises.
  • Produce onboarding materials such as connectivity patterns, validation checklists, and example configurations; support operator UAT and day-2 enablement.
  • Support commissioning, cutovers, and hypercare for priority workflows; track reuse, commissioning time, error and rerun reduction, and uptime.
  • Deliver reliable, usable orchestration software and audit-ready data trails aligned with validation and security expectations.
  • Create documentation, release notes, and onboarding kits that enable repeatable adoption, and improve software reliability through telemetry and corrective actions.
