About The Position

The Optical Engineering Team supports spacecraft programs, studies, proposals, and IRAD efforts by leading optical systems engineering for EO/IR payloads, laser systems, optical communications terminals, and space vehicle interfaces.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required by Federal Law
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance; U.S. Citizenship is required. Interim and/or final U.S. Secret clearance post-start is required.
  • 7+ years of industry experience in optical engineering.
  • Experience with space-to-space and/or space-to-ground laser communications.
  • Experience with space-based EO sensor performance, phenomenology, modeling, simulation, analysis, or calibration.

Nice To Haves

  • 10+ years of experience with satellite optical instrumentation, design, integration, testing, operation, or performance validation.
  • Experience developing and maintaining an Optical Communications Terminal link budget.
  • On-orbit experience operating or validating Optical Communications Terminals.
  • Experience with EO/IR payloads, star trackers, laser rangefinders, optical sensor suites, or satellite optical hardware.
  • Experience with onboard or ground processing of optical data to extract mission-related information.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance.
  • Experience mentoring or training optical engineering team members.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate mission-level and unit-level requirements for Electro-Optical/Infrared sensors, laser rangefinders, Optical Communications Terminals, and spacecraft interfaces.
  • Model and simulate optical system performance, including mission phenomenology, detection performance, spectral/spatial/radiometric sensor attributes, and link performance.
  • Define, plan, and execute ground and on-orbit testing to verify optical system performance.
  • Serve as the primary technical interface between optical payload teams, spacecraft teams, mission systems engineering, manufacturing, test, and mission data processing teams.
  • Support design, integration, qualification, calibration, and performance validation of satellite optical hardware, including EO/IR payloads, star trackers, laser rangefinders, and optical sensor suites.
  • Determine onboard and ground image/data processing approaches needed to meet mission requirements.
  • Manage supplier and partner performance, including technical progress, schedule, budget, and deliverables.
  • Support large-scale new business proposals and internal research and development efforts.
