About The Position

The Senior Optical Engineer will contribute to the design and development of ophthalmic medical devices within a multidisciplinary team. This role focuses on optical and optomechanical design, imaging systems, light delivery systems, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing handoff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in optical engineering, photonics, or medical device product development.
  • Experience developing products from initial concept and prototyping through manufacturing handoff.
  • Strong experience with optical design, analysis, characterization, and testing methodologies.
  • Experience designing machine vision/imaging systems and light delivery systems.
  • Experience with optomechanical design of optical subsystems, tooling, and fixtures.
  • Proficiency with Zemax and SolidWorks.
  • Familiarity with medical device design controls, verification and validation processes, FDA QSR, and ISO 13485.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and autonomous working skills.
  • Ability to work at optical benches and in laboratory environments for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. when required.
  • Ability to work occasionally in manufacturing or cleanroom environments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead optical engineering efforts for the second prototype build.
  • Contribute to optical and optomechanical design from concept through manufacturing handoff and sustaining engineering.
  • Design and develop machine vision/imaging and light delivery or illumination systems.
  • Perform optical design and analysis using tools such as Zemax and mechanical CAD using SolidWorks.
  • Develop and execute verification and validation test protocols.
  • Develop testing procedures to ensure system performance and reliability.
  • Design production tooling, test fixtures, and precision alignment fixtures.
  • Apply optical characterization techniques including imaging performance, MTF, beam profiling, radiometry/photometry, and interferometry.
  • Ensure development activities comply with medical device design control procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance to Optical Technicians and other product development team members.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, software, applied research, operations, project management, and quality teams.
  • Develop documentation including work instructions, testing procedures, and validation protocols.
  • Identify and resolve complex technical issues with minimal guidance.
