About The Position

The Senior Data Center Operating Engineer is responsible for supporting 100% uptime and ensuring the safe, reliable operation of all facility infrastructure within a high-rise, client-occupied data center. This role requires strong technical expertise in at least one core trade—Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing/Piping, or Central Utility Plant Operations—along with the flexibility to support multiple disciplines as part of daily and weekly operational activities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED, plus two years of trade school in electrical systems, refrigeration, or HVAC.
  • Prior experience working in a data center or raised-floor environment.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Required licenses or certifications in accordance with local jurisdictional requirements.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds.
  • Ability to work at heights and safely climb ladders up to 30 feet, including ladders rated for 300 lbs, while carrying a 20 lb tool bag.
  • Ability to frequently climb, bend, kneel, stoop, lift, and work overhead.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold).
  • Availability for on-call work, emergency response, overtime, and other duties as required in a 24/7 operation.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

  • Working knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS), power monitoring systems, and fire/life safety systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, furniture, fire/life safety, and control systems to ensure all systems operate within required standards.
  • Support and oversee facility services including preventive maintenance programs, purchasing, inventory control, and contracted services.
  • Clean, inspect, calibrate, and replace components on HVAC and related systems to maintain optimal performance and reliability.
  • Operate within a mission-critical environment, responding to system alarms, abnormal conditions, and operational events.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Record equipment readings, analyze trends, and make operational adjustments to maintain system stability.
  • Follow all policies related to the safe storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials; maintain excellent housekeeping standards at all times.
  • Conduct routine inspections of tools, equipment, and test instrumentation.
  • Monitor the quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness of work performed by external contractors and vendors.
  • Adhere to all company safety procedures and proactively identify, report, and mitigate hazards.
  • Ensure strict compliance with State, County, and City codes and regulations.
  • Complete all required safety training and actively participate in the Good Catch / Near Miss safety program.
  • Prepare and submit monthly operational reports to the Chief Engineer.
  • Develop and maintain Methods of Procedure (MOPs) for critical infrastructure and maintenance activities.
  • Escalate operational issues and risks promptly to the Chief Engineer.
  • Participate in annual performance reviews and ongoing professional development.
  • Attend required team meetings, safety briefings, and training sessions.
  • Perform additional administrative responsibilities as assigned.
