About The Position

The Faculty of Arts, one of the oldest and largest faculties at the University of Ottawa, is seeking a Senior Officer, Finance. This role is crucial for supporting the faculty's mission in the new economy by providing financial expertise. The Faculty of Arts is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment. The Senior Officer, Finance will report to the Manager of Finance and will be responsible for planning and coordinating financial operations, including payroll verification and financial transactions, to support managers and ensure policy adherence.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of accounting principles normally acquired through postsecondary studies in a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Minimum 3 years of demonstrated experience in a similar role
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software including financial systems, spreadsheets, databases, Internet and e-mail
  • Experience in interpreting, explaining and applying policies and regulations
  • Experience in preparing reports
  • Ability to produce high quality work under pressure while meeting strict deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • High level of discretion
  • Bilingualism – French and English (spoken and written)

Responsibilities

  • Administer internally and/or externally-funded budgets to ensure compliance with established policies.
  • Analyze financial statements against budgets for various types of funds to identify and address any inconsistencies.
  • Perform research and analysis to provide recommendations to managers and/or researchers on budget preparation, projections, and shortfalls to maximize revenue and contain expenditure.
  • Administer ongoing financial transaction processes for the sector to maintain financial integrity and transparency and ensure compliance with established policies.
  • Act as approval agent for invoices, travel advances, requests for reimbursement, and credit card statements to verify documentation and taxation.
  • Purchase goods and services for the sector, on purchase order or credit card, in compliance with all relevant policies.
  • Request estimates from suppliers on behalf of internal clients and provide recommendations.
  • Maintain an effective filing and records management system to preserve confidentiality and ensure complete and accurate documentation for future reference or audit purposes.
  • Prepare various moderately complex reports on financial transactions, accounts, payroll, and budget projections on a scheduled and ad-hoc basis.
  • Collaborate with Financial Resources to submit required financial data to meet reporting requirements of granting agencies.
  • Control and prepare financial records as required for audit.
  • Write and maintain procedure manuals for internal use on procedures, processes, and systems related to the incumbent’s responsibilities.
