About The Position

The Senior Naval Architect – Submarine Structures is responsible for professionally and efficiently executing work in support of client taskings for submarines. This role involves providing Naval Architecture advice and support to external and internal customers, managing technical work, and evaluating its effectiveness to improve best practice. The position requires working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team, complying with relevant business and ethics codes of conduct, and undertaking engineering and non-engineering activities in a way that contributes to best practice. The role may involve acting as Technical Lead (TL), Technical Assurer, or Project Manager (PM) on specified projects, and working within the BMT Quality Management System (QMS) processes and procedures. Maintaining technical competency and promoting a positive team culture are also key aspects of the role. Role-specific responsibilities include leading and conducting submarine structural calculations, providing expert opinions on the design and fitness for service of submarine structures (including pressure hull, its structural features, and primary/secondary structures), and working with shipyards, dockyards, owners, class, and OEMs for ship surveys. Knowledge of domain-specific standards such as IMO regulations, Class Society rules, Transport Canada Regulations, and Canadian Forces Technical Orders is essential. The role also requires maintaining a program of Continuing Professional Development and working with the Capability Manager to identify personnel needs and training opportunities.

Requirements

  • Degree in Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in Naval Architecture
  • Extensive experience working on new build or re-fit of existing submarines.
  • Existing registration or ability to obtain registration with Professional Engineering governance body in Province of work
  • Eligible for a Canadian and International security clearance.
  • Hold a valid passport and able to travel internationally on a minimum of a 3-month deployment.

Nice To Haves

  • Detailed knowledge and experience in the following areas: Ship or submarine hydrostatics including stability, weight control and margins; and Ship or submarine inclining experiments (submerged and surfaced)
  • Experience in the in-service support of naval systems and/or engineering design
  • Experience in the development and use of technical studies and drawings
  • An understanding of specifications for government and commercial vessels
  • Experience in systems integration, ship construction and/or repair

  • Provide an expert opinion on design and fitness for service of submarine structures including: Submarine pressure hull, Submarine pressure hull structural features, and Primary and secondary submarine structures.
  • Experienced in working with Shipyards, Dockyards, Owners, Class and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) to conduct ship surveys for design and engineering changes, mid-life upgrades and vessel condition documentation.
  • Knowledge of domain specific standards including International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, Class Society rules, Transport Canada Regulations and Canadian Forces Technical Orders.
  • Maintain a program of Continuing Professional Development to sustain your technical knowledge.
  • Work with Capability Manager to identify the levels of suitably qualified and experienced personnel (SQEP) required to fulfil current and projected demand.
  • Work with Capability Manager to identify training or other developmental opportunities to develop SQEP within BMT.
