Senior Motor Control Firmware Engineer (FOC)

Allocor TechCrozet, VA
$125,000 - $155,000Onsite

About The Position

The role involves developing and implementing Field-Oriented Control (FOC) for Taurus controllers, which operate at high speeds and voltages. The engineer will be responsible for the core control loops that manage torque, using the allocore C++ SDK. This position offers the opportunity to work on code that will be used in aircraft and boats, moving beyond reference designs to own critical functionalities.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in embedded motor-control firmware development.
  • Required expertise in Field-Oriented Control (FOC) on Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) and Brushless DC (BLDC) motors.
  • Proficiency in discrete-time control theory, transforms, Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM), and current-loop bandwidth.
  • Experience writing production-level C/C++ code for bare-metal or thin Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS).
  • Ability to interpret oscilloscope waveforms and map files.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as CAN (2.0/FD) and RS-485, as well as encoder and Hall effect sensor interfaces.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with sensorless observers.
  • Knowledge of Silicon Carbide (SiC) timing.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink for embedded code generation.
  • Familiarity with functional safety standards.
  • Experience with hybrid propulsion systems.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and harden FOC algorithms including Clarke/Park transforms, current and speed loops, field weakening, overmodulation, dead-time compensation, and observers.
  • Write real-time C/C++ code for microcontrollers (Cortex-M, STM32-class and beyond), managing PWM generation, ADC, DMA, and isolated communication interfaces.
  • Develop and maintain sensored and sensorless motor control paths, including calibration and protection mechanisms suitable for demanding environments like flight and marine applications.
  • Extend the allocore SDK to enable customers to integrate their own outer control loops without modifying the core inner loop firmware.
  • Collaborate with the hardware engineering team for new hardware bring-up, and develop comprehensive testing strategies including Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), scripted dynamometer testing, regression testing, and production load testing.

Benefits

  • Top-tier medical HMO and PPO options.
  • 100% company-sponsored Health Savings Account (HSA) plan option.
  • Dental coverage.
  • Vision coverage.
  • Unlimited Paid Time Off (PTO).
  • 11 paid holidays per year.
  • Flexible spending accounts.
  • Dependent care savings accounts.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Disability insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Potential for equity opportunities and/or cash bonus.
