The Senior Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for supporting the lending efforts of Residential Mortgage by detailed underwriting of new and renewed loans, including conventional, FHA, VA, and USDA loans. The role also involves providing recommendations to the residential mortgage loan production support staff.

Requirements

  • Skill in using computer and Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of general financial and banking principles.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of bank regulations related to, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Anti-Money Laundering Act, and the USA PATRIOT Act.
  • Ability to communicate with professional maturity regarding complicated issues and opportunities with sales and processing staff.
  • Ability to communicate effective both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally with staff and management at all levels of the organization.

  • High school diploma or equivalent, required
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience with Microsoft Office products, including Microsoft Word and Excel, required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in mortgage underwriting, required.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrites Residential Mortgage loan requests in a manner of consistency and in accordance with the Bank’s credit policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Provides recommendation based on the collection, analysis, and interpretation of (i) the proposed borrower’s income, assets, liabilities, (ii) relevant demographic, supply and demand data, and (iii) financial statements and tax returns for Borrowers and Guarantors.
  • Analyzes appraisals and provides evaluations to management to include (i) property eligibility as it relates to each loan program, (ii) current market conditions relating to supply and demand for the property, and (iii) analysis and evaluation of the validity of each comparable sale to ensure the market value of the subject property is accurate.
  • Consults with and advises loan personnel throughout the process, from origination to closing, relative to underwriting conditions or issues as they may relate to a fundable loan.
  • Prepares an informal loan write-up with conditions to be met prior to approval, closing, and funding each loan, and clearing each condition as the documentation is provided by the origination staff.
  • Maintains the independence of the underwriting function and the recommendation of the initial credit risk rating.
  • Maintains good punctuality and attendance to work.
  • Follows Bank policy, procedures, and guidelines.
