Senior Mortgage Underwriter

Associated Mortgage Bankers Inc•Miami, FL
•$75,000 - $90,000•Onsite

About The Position

Elliman Capital is the mortgage lending arm associated with Douglas Elliman, one of the most recognized names in residential real estate. As a division of Associated Mortgage Bankers, Inc., we lend nationwide, with our strongest concentration in markets including New York, Florida, California, and Texas. We are adding a Senior Mortgage Underwriter to our Miami office. This is a hands-on credit role for an underwriter who is comfortable across the full product spectrum, from agency and government loans to jumbo and Non-QM, and who can make sound, well-documented decisions without needing a second set of eyes on every file. Much of our business comes through real estate relationships, so the pipeline leans toward purchase transactions with firm contract dates. Many files involve borrowers whose income, assets, or collateral require genuine analysis: business owners with multiple entities, significant asset portfolios, second homes and investment properties, and condominium projects that call for careful review. The right person takes pride in files that close on time and hold up afterward. You will work side by side with processing, closing, and our Loan Officers, and your judgment will carry real weight in how files are structured, conditioned, and brought to the closing table.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on mortgage underwriting experience
  • Recent underwriting experience across conventional, FHA, VA, jumbo, and Non-QM loans
  • Strong command of self-employed and complex income analysis, including business tax returns
  • Proficiency with DU and LPA
  • Working knowledge of ATR/QM, TRID, and fair lending requirements
  • Clear, direct written and verbal communication with processors and Loan Officers
  • Ability to work full-time, in person, at our Miami office

Nice To Haves

  • FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) underwriter designation
  • VA underwriter approval; SAR designation a plus
  • Encompass experience
  • Condominium project review experience, particularly Florida condominiums
  • Experience with purchase-focused, high-balance, or luxury residential transactions
  • USDA underwriting experience

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite conventional (Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac), FHA, VA, USDA, jumbo, and Non-QM loans, issuing approvals, suspensions, and denials within your authority and applicable agency and investor guidelines
  • Analyze income for salaried, commissioned, and self-employed borrowers, including personal and business tax returns, K-1s, profit and loss statements, and bank statement income
  • Evaluate credit, assets, reserves, and liabilities; identify layered risk and document compensating factors clearly
  • Run and interpret DU and LPA findings, confirming that loan data and documentation support the recommendation
  • Review appraisals for value support, property eligibility, and condition, and escalate valuation concerns when warranted
  • Review condominium projects for eligibility and warrantability, including questionnaires, budgets, and association documentation
  • Underwrite Non-QM programs such as bank statement, DSCR, and asset-based qualification against investor guidelines and overlays
  • Issue clear, complete, and prioritized conditions, and review condition submissions promptly to protect closing dates
  • Communicate directly with processors and Loan Officers to structure files, explain decisions, and resolve issues before they threaten a closing
  • Ensure files meet agency, investor, and regulatory requirements, including ATR/QM, TRID, and fair lending standards
  • Manage a multi-product pipeline while meeting turn-time expectations and documenting decisions thoroughly in the LOS
  • Serve as a technical resource on guideline questions and complex scenarios, and support the development of newer operations staff as the team grows
  • Identify recurring file issues and recommend process improvements to operations leadership

Benefits

  • $75,000 to $90,000 annual base salary, commensurate with experience, plus eligibility for tiered per-file bonuses. Bonus compensation is based on individual file volume and is not guaranteed.
