Senior Mission Software Engineer

Anduril•Waltham, MA

About The Position

The Imaging team builds and fields camera and sensor systems for security challenges in the United States and allied countries. The team works across hardware, firmware, networked services, and cloud integrations, and supports systems through deployment and field use. The Senior Mission Software Engineer will join the Imaging Interfaces team. This role combines software development with responsibility for maintaining fielded systems, diagnosing full-stack issues, and representing the team in integrations with external teams and customers. Work may include extending a gRPC service, diagnosing time synchronization problems with field operators, and traveling to support customer integrations. The engineer will own software end-to-end in a fast-moving environment and help ensure deployed imaging systems remain healthy and available. The position includes approximately 15% travel for field testing and customer integrations. Eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret clearance is required.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of software development experience with meaningful production responsibility, including ownership of systems after they ship.
  • Strong Python and C++ skills; ability to work effectively in either language.
  • At least 5 years working in Linux-based environments, including bare-metal hardware.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve issues across system boundaries, including networking, services, and hardware interaction, even without full visibility into every component.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical problems clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 15% of the time for field testing and customer integrations.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with gRPC or similar RPC frameworks.
  • Familiarity with Linux systems service management and observability practices.
  • React/JSX experience.
  • Familiarity with Nix or NixOS.
  • Experience supporting fielded or deployed systems, rather than only development environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own the health and uptime of deployed imaging systems; triage, diagnose, and drive resolution of issues across code, firmware, networks, and hardware.
  • Build and maintain modular production software services that run on edge-compute devices in austere environments, ensuring they are reliable, observable, and maintainable.
  • Work directly with field operators and non-technical users to diagnose and resolve issues on deployed hardware, communicating clearly under pressure.
  • Represent the team as a subject matter expert in integrations with other products and teams, remotely and on-site.
  • Develop broad understanding of hardware, firmware, networking, and software, and use it to improve service interactions and graceful degradation when components fail.
  • Plan, build, and test complex functionality in collaboration with firmware, hardware, and platform engineers across team and organizational boundaries.
  • Travel approximately 15% of the time for field testing and customer integrations.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers and are considered part of total compensation.
  • Top-tier benefits package available at little to no cost to employees.
