About The Position

The Build, Configuration & Release team is pivotal to building and delivering the core products that Wind River relies on. As a Senior Member of Technical Staff, your contribution in this role will have a direct and significant impact on the success of thousands of engineers and customers worldwide. You will be ultimately responsible for architecting, evolving, and maintaining a complex and modern build system for a suite of embedded products with well over 1M lines of code. This is a senior technical leadership role requiring deep expertise in build systems, configuration management, and release engineering. You will set the technical direction for build infrastructure, mentor team members, drive cross-team alignment, and be a key decision-maker on build architecture and tooling strategy.

Requirements

  • BSc or higher degree in Computer Science, Computer/Electrical/Software Engineering, or other STEM field, or equivalent work experience
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with significant focus on build systems, configuration management, and release engineering
  • Deep expertise with modern C and C++ builds systems and toolchains (GNU Make, CMake, Ninja, Meson, Bazel)
  • Expert-level proficiency in configuration systems such as Kconfig and similar frameworks
  • Strong experience with scripting languages: Python, Groovy, Bash, PowerShell, Perl
  • Extensive experience with source code management tools (Git) and branching/merging strategies at scale
  • Proven experience with containerized build systems and infrastructure (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with very large codebases and projects with complex multi-layered dependency management
  • Track record of technical leadership, including mentoring engineers and driving cross-team technical decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to architect build systems that scale across large, distributed engineering organizations
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to debug complex cross-platform build failures
  • Strong communication and documentation skills; ability to influence and align stakeholders across teams and geographies
  • Self-directed and proactive; able to identify systemic issues and drive improvements without explicit direction
  • Collaborative mindset; strong team player comfortable working in a high-pace, high-accountability environment
  • Ability to balance technical excellence with pragmatic delivery

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with embedded software development and RTOS development
  • Experience with SBOM tooling and supply chain security practices
  • Knowledge of certification standards (DO-178B/C, ISO 26262) and their impact on build and configuration processes
  • Open-source contributions, particularly in building and configuration technologies for Linux and other environments
  • Experience leading teams or as a scrum master; Scrum certifications (CSM, PSM) are a plus
  • Familiarity with Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS) and RTOS development tools
  • Experience with build system migration or modernization projects
  • Knowledge of reproducible builds and hermetic build environments

Responsibilities

  • Architect and drive the evolution of state-of-the-art C and C++ build systems, designing scalable and maintainable solutions that support complex product lines
  • Lead the design and implementation of build and configuration systems integrated into development pipelines
  • Own the technical strategy for build infrastructure, including reproducibility and build performance optimization
  • Build and maintain infrastructure allowing for 3rd party integration points; support build infrastructure across multiple globally distributed teams
  • Provide senior technical leadership and mentorship to developers on build system integration, best practices, and troubleshooting
  • Investigate and resolve complex, cross-cutting issues related to Wind River and customer builds and configurations
  • Drive initiatives to improve build times, reliability, and developer experience across the organization
  • Collaborate with product management, architecture, and development teams to ensure build systems meet evolving product requirements
  • Take responsibility for documentation, standards, and processes related to build, configuration, and release engineering
  • Identify and drive adoption of emerging build technologies and practices; represent Wind River in relevant open-source communities
  • Provide technical guidance on Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) generation and compliance
  • Contribute to release engineering processes including branching strategies, release automation, and artifact management
