About The Position

Performs, evaluates and reports routine and STAT laboratory tests on blood, urine, and other body fluids using various automated and manual methods. The Senior Medical Laboratory Technician hired for the purpose of working on 2nd and 3rd shifts must be able to perform testing as a “Generalist” in various laboratory departments. The Senior Medical Laboratory Technician hired for the purpose of working on the 1st shift must be able to perform all required test procedures in the department(s) by which he/she has been hired. The Senior Medical Laboratory Technician works under the supervision of a Medical Technologist and/or Laboratory Supervisor.

Requirements

  • ASCP certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician required.
  • Must be licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technician by the New York State Education Department.
  • Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related science.
  • Independent, mature, self-motivated, reliable and responsible.
  • Able to serve the needs of patients ages neonatal to geriatric.
  • Able to deal with all types of customers in a pleasant, professional manner.
  • Able to handle numerous tasks simultaneously.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills.
  • Able to perform assigned duties in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
  • Telephone, computer, copy machine, fax machine, equipment related to specific testing duties.
  • Category I - Job classification in which all employees have occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens.
  • Able to operate instrumentation and follow procedures to produce quality laboratory results.
  • Quality Control results meet requirements for release of results.
  • Supplies are adequate to produce lab results as requested by customers.
  • Attends continuing education programs throughout the year.
  • Completes hospital educational requirements and utilizes opportunities to learn whenever scheduling allows.
  • Assists supervisor when requests are made.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of equipment issues.
  • Patient results are not released until quality control problems are corrected and reviewed by the supervisor or designee.
  • Willingly accepts additional tasks as assigned by supervisor to maintain the operation of the laboratory.
  • Demonstrates competency on periodic competency assessments.
  • Seeks additional training to ensure competency.
  • Performs alternate test procedures to maintain lab service level requirements.
  • Proficiency test scores are graded and acceptable scores are achieved.
  • Continuing education records will be completed and forwarded to Human Resources annually regarding mandatory educational requirements.
  • Complete annual health assessment form as required, maintains current inoculations.
  • Current license as required by N.Y. State will be forwarded to Human Resources upon renewal or issuance.

Responsibilities

  • Tests are performed using various automated and manual methods.
  • Operate sophisticated equipment per section procedures.
  • Perform quality control procedures as directed by supervision.
  • Notify supervision when supplies of standards, controls, reagents and other materials necessary for the proper function of the department need to be ordered.
  • Maintain and update his/her knowledge of laboratory medicine as well as hospital policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Assists department supervisor in various clerical duties as well as other non-specified tasks.
  • Equipment problems are reported to supervision.
  • Report quality control problems to supervisor and perform remedial action as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains Competency per department specific protocols.
  • Provide assistance with troubleshooting functions when necessary.
  • Assist with proficiency testing as directed by supervision.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures related to: Mandatory education, Annual health assessment, Licensure verification.

  • Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates.
  • The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
