Senior Medical Science Liaison – Cell Therapy (Pennsylvania)
About The Position
AstraZeneca is seeking a Senior Medical Science Liaison (MSL) to join their Cell Therapy team in Pennsylvania. This role is the local medical representative for AstraZeneca in cell therapy and multiple myeloma, responsible for developing a local medical strategy to enhance patient care and outcomes within their assigned territory. The MSL is a field-based professional with deep scientific, clinical, and therapeutic area knowledge, providing medical and scientific support for AstraZeneca's cell therapy products. The position involves building relationships with thought leaders and healthcare professionals, engaging in scientific discussions, responding to information requests, and educating provider teams on disease states, treatment landscapes, and product data. The role also supports the implementation of cell therapy infusions, gathers site-level insights, identifies educational gaps, and explores opportunities for collaboration on research initiatives. The MSL will collaborate with internal stakeholders across Medical Affairs, Commercial, and R&D, and represent Medical Affairs at scientific meetings.
Requirements
- Advanced scientific degree required (i.e. PharmD, MD/DO, PhD, PA or NP) in a relevant health science or clinical discipline.
- 5+ years of experience in hematology/oncology with at least 2 years in a field medical or equivalent scientific engagement role, preferably in cell therapy and/or multiple myeloma.
- Ability to express ideas clearly in written documentation, one-on-one conversations, and in small group dialogues with the ability to distill complexity down to key messages and scientific narrative for internal/external stakeholders.
- Experience supporting the development and/or launch of a new pharmaceutical product in the U.S.
- Experience operating in a matrixed environment with cross-functional partners in Medical Affairs, Commercial, and R&D.
- Ability to travel (40-60% by car, train, and plane domestic).
- Must live or be near within the territory of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia and Pittsburgh).
Nice To Haves
- Doctorate degree (e.g. MD or equivalent, PharmD or PhD) with oncology/hematology specialization preferred.
- Direct knowledge, experience, and expertise in Hematology/Oncology Cell Therapy.
- Experience of working with headquarters and implementing HQ plans in the field.
- Collaborative matrix management skills within diverse groups to achieve excellent results in shared goals.
- A track record of building and maintaining a deep continued connection to medical practice/healthcare delivery.
- Working knowledge of FDA and GMP requirements, industry rules, and regulations governing cell therapy quality manufacturing and field-based medical roles.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain scientific relationships with hematology/cell therapy thought leaders, investigators, and appropriate HCPs across academic and community centers within an assigned territory.
- Engage in scientific exchanges with the multidisciplinary team, including treating hematologists/oncologists, cell therapy physicians, APPs, pharmacists, apheresis and cell processing staff, and nursing.
- Respond to unsolicited requests for scientific and product information in accordance with company policy.
- Establish oneself as a trusted scientific advisor, peer, and expert to both internal stakeholders and external HCPs.
- Educate cell therapy provider teams on disease state, CAR-T mechanism of action, multiple myeloma therapeutic landscape, safety and clinical management, manufacturing processes, and data pertaining to the infusion center and patient management, guided by compliance considerations.
- Support the implementation of cell therapy infusions in cell therapy infusion centers by timely support of healthcare providers in navigating the complexity of cell therapy and diverse stakeholder groups.
- Gather and synthesize site-level insights from site physician leadership and multiple HCP segments within the region and communicate with medical leadership and relevant internal partners.
- Identify data and educational gaps through discussion with External Scientific Experts (ESE) to inform medical affairs strategy and address unmet patient needs.
- Identify opportunities to partner with HCPs on disease state initiatives, collaborative research projects, and investigator-sponsored research (ISR) of interest and in alignment with areas of scientific interest.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders across Medical Affairs, Commercial, and Research and Development (R&D).
- Support and represent Medical Affairs at relevant congresses and scientific meetings through scientific exchange with ESEs, medical booth coverage, and sharing scientific and competitive insights.
